Smoking now banned in cars with children.

On the day smoking in cars when children are present became illegal, "shocking" new figures show the harm secondhand smoke poses to youngsters - even with the windows down. The new law which protects children from the effects of tobacco smoke will see the driver and any smoker fined ÂŁ50 if they have someone under 18 in the car too.
And Dr Anil Namdeo, of Newcastle University's Transport Operations Research Group, has carried out experiments on secondhand smoke in vehicles to test levels of dangerous chemicals - fine particles 100 times thinner than a human hair known as PM2.5 - which children sitting in the back of a car would breathe in.
His team tested having the windows open or closed, fans on or off and with the air recirculating or not.

Secondhand smoke contains 4,000 chemicals, more than 50 of which cause cancer.
Experts think three million children are currently exposed to it, putting them at risk of serious conditions including asthma, bronchitis and infections of the chest and ear.

I couldn't agree more with this new law.
If people want to smoke themselves to death, that's fine.
Just don't take a chance with Children.
You have no right to do that!

Oh! And don't smoke in front of me either! :playful:

I suppose it's a good law, but it scares me because of its "Big Government" implications just as it has in the U.S.

Besides - I just woke up, and the title of your thread seemed to say "Smoking With Chickens in the Car Now Banned" - I wondered what insanity was going on now ...

Philly, perhaps you should consider getting help re your burgeoning obsession with chickens? Glad about the smoking ban. Good stuff. Children need to be protected.

Which came first? The chicken or Phil?

Couldnt help remember the old Sunday rides on the old back roads. Grandma and me were the only two, out of seven in the car, that didn't smoke. When the windows were rolled down, the air turned blue around the car. I think it's a good idea to at least stop, at a rest stop, and do your smoking. Maybe the child will grow up disliking cigarettes, unlike I did.

I know some people will want to shoot me, but I might take it a step further. Not allowing smoking and driving. It's not as dangerous as texting or being under the influence. But I remember you have to get one out of the pack and then futz around finding your lighter or matches while steering, the maybe you need to flip on the radio or change stations. Plus all the cigarette butts on the roads and highways. Also have you ever been stuck at a light or heavy traffic and somebody's smoke is filling your car?

Then on the other hand I remember smoking and driving...yes with kids in the car...maybe that's why they mutated the way they did...I can't be a hypocrite, if you're a devoted smoker you NEED that cigarette to drive sometimes.

'I know some people will want to shoot me'
Including me!'

That's another bullet!':playful:

I think it was a long time coming, but glad to see it happening. now all we need is someone to actually police it.

I am exempt from wearing a seat belt since 1984, Only twice in all them years have I been stopped by police.

People are still using their mobile phones blatantly.

Roy

Yes, its been a long time in coming, just think of all the lives that could of been saved, its a shame so many have died from cigarettes before people wised up.

Boozer, have you ever driven with kids in the car? I had five under ten for a few years there.

Usually at this point the baby's diaper is overflowing poop too.

Yes my friend.
I have driven with my three children in the car.
But I have never smoked, so I never did get around to poisoning them.:D

The rest is too much information!:playful::D

I say take it further yet - get rid of the TV screens, the GPS crap and the stereo systems. If you want to eliminate distractions then go all the way.

Well SifuPhil, to varying degrees there is a lot to say for banning all of them!
But people nowadays don't take any notice of the law.
How many people more or less ignore the law against using mobile phones in cars here in the UK?
Answer: Not a lot!
Idiots all of them.
Lock em' up I say.
Including those smoking in a car carrying children!:D

It's time for everybody to quit smoking! I didn't croak from quitting, so I don't think that anyone else will either.

I got a whole list of things on my "do-over" list, and
not starting smoking
is high on the list.

That's true, unfortunately. But you know that people will fight for what they perceive to be their "rights", including their right to kill others. :(

It is a good law, but in the press yesterday or the
day before, it was reported that the police are not
going to enforce it.

So it has been a waste of "Hot Air" debating it.

Story Here.

Mike.

Yes Mike, I read that, and the whole thing will probably end up a waste of space.
BUT, honestly.
If I were to see someone smoking now with children in the car, then I will just have to say something.

Mind you, I don't like hospital food! :playful:

Oooohhh look Mike...
Here are our MPs using just some of that hot air to get to La La Land! :D

smoke free zones in Tasmania include From 1 March 2012, additional smoke-free areas were introduced in Tasmania. Aimed at reducing exposure to harmful second-hand cigarette smoke, they cover places where people – especially children – gather. Smoke-free areas now cover bus and pedestrian malls, bus shelters, outdoor dining areas, sports venues, beaches, public swimming pools and children’s playgrounds and also included no smoking in cars.
Tasmania has also banned smoking in prisons, which I personally think is a stupid idea and has already caused numerous uprisings within prison walls - hard enough in there I would think without having to give up smoking at the same time!

It's the same regulations in Scotland, England, and Wales. There are designated outdoor areas in some places where you can smoke. On our trip home through Amsterdam airport which is smoke free we noticed tiny little smoking booths that are packed with people. Of course, when they open the door.....gag!

Yes Ameriscot, I am so pleased that smoking is now banned in pubs, restaurants and the like.
When I think of all that sitting in pubs over the years, sitting amongst smokers I could gag also.

And while I am at it.
Those E. Cigarettes should be banned also.
But of course, in most establishments, they are.

We wouldn't go to pubs very often while they still allowed smoking. Being an ex-smoker I'm less tolerant of other people's nasty smoke.

Yes, I agree.
But I really don't know why anyone would want to smoke nowadays.
I mean, everybody knows now that smoking can cause lung cancer and all sorts of other dangers, including respiratory problems.

One day unfortunately they may be dying a painful lung cancer death in hospital.
Perhaps then that person will look back and think.
Could have
Would have
Should have given up smoking.

It's Too Late to do anything about it then ime afraid.:(

BUT.
If they have children, then they should not be smoking in front of them, thereby exposing them to those dangers.
How could you?

Quitting smoking is extremely difficult. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done. Everybody knows that it can kill them, but cigarettes are as addictive as heroin or cocaine. It's physical and psychological.

My brother in law in Australia recently quit and money helped motivate him - it's $20 a pack.

its official..obesety cost more in medical expenses than smokers,do we ban madonalds
