SNAP benefits to end due to US govt shutdown

The problem in a nutshell: Congress gets paid during a government shutdown.

If lawmakers who can't even agree on anything were subject to the same financial consequences of not getting paid, this wouldn't happen;)
Having made the above statement, which I don't disagree with, you should dig a little deeper and separate those congressional folks who ARE in favor of the cuts and those that are not.

SNAP FOOD Stamps to continue according to this
Yes, congress needed a federal judge's order so they can use federal funds that aren't meant for the SNAP program.

One government official said he thinks the funds will be available by Thursday of this week, but he isn't a member of congress; he heard it through the grapevine.

Billionaires like the Walton family (not the John Boy ones) are some of the main beneficiaries of the SNAP program.

They know that they can cut their employees’ wages by the same amount as the government subsidies that are available to those workers. Every penny of government benefits becomes a penny less that Walmart, for example, has to pay its people who qualify for benefits.

And then there's the fact that a lot of these Snap benefits get spent at Walmart.

"The shutdown will halt about $8 billion a month in federal food assistance. Walmart captures 24% of all SNAP shopper spending, according to Numerator’s 2025 SNAP Evolution report—triple Kroger’s share and far ahead of Costco, Amazon and Sam’s Club. Walmart was the first retailer to accept SNAP online in all 50 states in 2023 and launched the Walmart+ Assist program, which offers half-price memberships for those receiving aid. “If SNAP payments stop, spending by the lowest income groups will fall,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of data and analytics firm GlobalData. “Walmart gets a plurality of the spending, so it will be hit the hardest.”"

Walmart could lose $2B if SNAP goes dark

The saga continues:

"The [name redacted] administration moved on Friday[11/7/25] to deny swift and full food stamp payments to millions of low-income Americans, as it asked a federal appeals court to halt a judge’s recent order that would preserve those benefits during the shutdown.

The legal salvo once again plunged the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, into confusion and chaos"

It's us against the billionaires!!!

Regulations about what federal money can fund SNAP benefits are very specific, and for a good reason. The administration wants clarification because the judge said they can use funds that aren't SNAP specific, which could have undesirable consequences down the road.

As I understand this, the sticking point is about extending the increased funding of the ACA. Given AI & robotics are projected to replace human labor how will taxes be generated by non human labor to pay for funding every social assistance program funded by government?

Gotta love social media. A new tactic is hatching.

Walmart and grocery stores in New York are expected to face mass looting as SNAP recipients face a lack of November benefits due to the federal government shutdown. Reports have indicated that people are organizing planned thefts online, prompting authorities to urge stores to bolster their security. Users on TikTok and Facebook are allegedly coordinating timed thefts of Walmart and other grocery stores.

One organizer wrote, “At the end of the day they’re trying to see if we’re gonna stick together, and we are gonna stick together." Another organizer wrote, “The thing is, they can’t catch everybody. All you gotta do is run, Forrest, run, ok?”

I remember back when we were not well off just out of the Navy when we were short of money I looked for part time work to meet an unexpected expense. Everything from janitorial work to all the jobs in the building trades. The good news is those experiences helped me secure great employment later in life.

And no I wouldn't expect those unable to seek part time work to.

They can't afford groceries but they can afford to chance a theft and possible jail time and court costs? That seems kinda odd to me.

Facebook and TikTok are loaded with agitators who get off on creating chaos. So far none of the mass actions described in their posts have come about, though the dates when the were supposed to occur have come and gone.

Contact to generate this action has a cost. I guess it's better to chance arrest.

The average internet cost per month in the USA typically ranges from $50 to $100. More specifically:
The average monthly cost is around $75.72.

Standard plans usually fall between $50 and $80.

Basic plans can start as low as $10 to $20 per month, especially for speeds under 100 Mbps.
1
Fiber internet plans average about $81 per month.

These costs can vary based on factors like location, provider, and speed tier.

The average monthly cost of a cell phone plan in the U.S. is approximately $141 as of 2025. This figure can vary based on factors such as the type of plan (prepaid or postpaid), data usage, and additional features included in the plan.

Postpaid plans usually range from $50 to $70 per month.

They need snap and can afford all that?

*I get needing a phone but I would think the cheapest plan they could get would be in order.

I've been getting some of those videos in my YouTube feed. They're posted by Tik-Tok crossovers. I'm not suggesting the SNAP benefits delay isn't a serious issue, but one poster recorded her benefit complaints and her support for the mass-thefts while dipping into a large bag of snack chips stuffed between her meaty thighs. Hilarious irony.

If you're gonna represent, give it some thought, man! A little self-awareness can go a long way.

If I was in danger of starving, which I am not by a long shot, but if I were, or I had kids at home that were going hungry, I would steal from Walmart in a heartbeat. And I wouldn't go for the heap stuff like spaghetti or Mac and cheese either. I'd head straight for the meat department and load up on as many rib eyes and T-bones as I could.

Few people are in danger of actually starving. The first SNAP benefits weren't due to load on people's accounts until the 3rd or 4th, so it's been 4 days at most. And many (most? all?) are reporting that benefits are being loaded on their cards as per usual.

However it works out in the immediate future, this scare should be a learning lesson to people living on the edge.

The only way I've ever gotten out of a hole was to first stop digging.

If it were just people who can’t fend for themselves, there wouldn’t be an issue. Sadly, far to may receiving welfare of all kinds WON’T fend for themselves. Entirely too much fraud in these programs.

Those who qualify for SNAP, generally qualify for a FREE government phone ... and the free phone comes with unlimited talk and text and I think, 10GB data. It used to come with unlimited data too. I qualified for and had a free government phone for about 3yrs but didn't qualify for SNAP.

The federal gov't only subsidizes social services, which otherwise relies on state and county taxes.

I'm not very hopeful. But I am hoping.
