If I had my way, I'd be living in Ecuador right now......like a queen. But it's Ecuador or my boyfriend and so far, he's winning out.

Why Ecuador in particular?

I know a middle aged couple that relocated to Panama and the wife who is an extraordinarily competent and resourceful woman couldn't hack the cultural shock. The last straw for the woman was the way that the Panamanians mistreated animals.

Ecuador, especially Quito, has wonderful weather, low living costs and a world-class medical system that foreigners can buy into for about $200 per month. The country is politically stable. Gas is cheap. Back around 2003 or so, Ecuador discontinued their currency and adopted the American dollar. The people are reserved, but friendly and like Americans. The country has incredibly diverse geography and stupendously beautiful places to visit.

It sounds great. but coincidentally the situation with the couple I mentioned was that her husband liked it and she couldn't abide it. That can be a problem can't it?

Australia is on the pricey side, especially Sydney, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Visit, sure but would never consider living in another country.

If I had to flee, I'd choose New Zealand as a safe haven.

Yes, that would be my situation. The boyfriend won't entertain the notion of living outside the U.S.

I spent 13 months at Howard AFB in 1965-1966, just after the flag riots. The culture shock was incredible-it's an entirely different world. The level of squalor in much of Panama City was horrific. I'll never forget a group of us getting lost while on leave, and wandering into the shanty section of town. Huts made of leftover scraps of tin and wood, with mud streets full of human urine and fecal matter. It still makes me cringe to think about it.

Best place to live, the farm I grew up on and has been in our family for 4 generations. I am happy on the farm.
