Someone I've never heard of has apparently given out my address for something or other...

This morning a guy in a white pickup zoomed into my driveway (I was outside) and I asked if I could help him.

He said he was here to see someone named Dennis. He had a slip of paper in his hand with something written on it, but I didn't see what. I asked him if it was recent information and he said he had just gotten the address. Maybe he was just a bill collector or something, but it was so weird.

Then he said he'd go and bang on the door. I said "no you won't, this is my house and I don't know anyone named Dennis". My neighbor was out in her front yard and I asked her if she knew anyone named Dennis (she had been watching and listening closely :love_heart: ) and she said no. The creepy guy said "no need to get aggressive about it", jumped in his pickup and tore down the street.

So...I called the sheriff's office and they entered a report about it into their system. If creepy guy returns, I can call 911.

Thankfully, I get all my mail at a PO Box, so that helps! Unnerving situation!

That does sound creepy. Let's hope he wont be back

It could be an innocent mistake.

I used to get telephone calls every fall asking if I would allow people to hunt on my farm.

I've never owned a farm.

Glad you put your foot down with this guy Bev and you had a witness out there too. He had some nerve trying to rush past you to knock on the door, that would have made me very angry for sure! Hope you don't see him anymore, be careful!

I got a text message last from an Arizona phone number: "Are you available for a massage?"

I texted back: "You have the wrong phone number."

Got a text back: "Yes or no?"

Texted back: "I don't know who you are texting, but no massages here."

Got this text: "Look, if you can't, just say so."

I texted back: "No and don't ever ask me again."

End of story. I don't know anyone in Arizona. And I'm not a masseuse. At least I assume he/she was talking about that kind of massage.....

Reminded of a weird thing that happened a week or so ago. My cell rang, but stopped ringing before I got to it. I did not recognize the number, but since it was while Rick was in the hospital, I decided to call it back, in case it was one of his friends calling to ask about him. I let it ring several times, but no answer. After I hung up, I put my phone back down, and left the room to, um, powder my nose. Anyway, my phone starts ringing again. When I went to my phone, it was the SAME number as before, but this time they left a voice mail. When I listened, it was a woman's voice saying "Stop calling my mumber, dammit"

Let's hope it was a mistake. If anything more happens, the documentation is in place...

I think I know what happened. As I mentioned in another thread, telemarketers and scammers are spoofing phone number, where the display on the phone shows a number that is not really the number that is actually being used to make the call, but is making it seem like it is. So when you called that number, the real owner of that phone number doesn't know what's going on, and this probably happened several times with other people with those people calling that number, too. Plain old crooks! It's horrible and no one seems to be doing anything about it.

Marie 5656 I got a voice mail like that too from a number I didn't recognize & hadn't called so I just blocked it. Wondered f they thought people would call them back to say they hadn't been calling (isn't that crazy!) .& could capture some info that way. Any more, I just don't pick up on any un identified calls.

I don’t answer my phone if I don’t know who it is, either, or at least think that I know who it is. Anyone who might legitimately be calling me (like my doctor’s office), I add into my contacts so that they show up. Even Kroger pharmacy is in there because i used to get my heart meds from their pharmacy.
Otherwise, I figure that if it is legitimate, they can leave me a voicemail and i will then call back if necessary.

I used to get phone calls from people that needed help with their cable service (Comcast), so apparently, the cable guy’s cell number was similar enough to mine that people mis-read it and call me instead.
When they left a message, I always called back to let them know it was the wrong number, and advised them to call Comcast and get the correct number for the repair person.

Although, they should have realized immediately that they had not reached Comcast, as your voicemail never said anything with the name Comcast in it!

I used to get a lot of calls, when I answered,
a Philippines sounding voice asked for Mr.???
or Edward ???

As I have lived here for 17 years and I am called
Mike, I just told them that they had the wrong
number.

My phone & ISP company are now blocking all
known scam numbers, so I don't get any now.

Mike.

These days there is no telling what that might have been about. One person's "bill collector" might be another person's "strong arm for a drug dealer" out collecting monies owed... you never know until you do and then again, you might not ever know.

One gambit I have dealt with a few times lately is someone calling my number and asking for someone that I don't know. When I politely tell them they have the wrong number then they just go on talking to me; they just used some random name to "cold call" for whatever they are selling and/or donations they are after. I just repeat you have the wrong number while hanging up.
