Soul, Funk and Blues Music, Old and New

I'm a huge Buddy Guy fan, love him! I've seen him live three times.

I had read that back in the day, being a performer and playing at the Apollo was like a country singer performing at the Grand Ole Opry. That's when you knew, as a performer, that you made the big time. I also read that Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the first white group to play at the Apollo and were well received by the audience. My parents must have really liked Holly. They had a lot of his 45's and albums. I liked his sound for the most part, but a few of his songs were so-so. I played the drums at the Naval Academy and was asked to try out for the U.S. Navy Band, but had no aspirations of being a drummer for a band. I wanted to do other things with my career.

Back in that era, there were a lot of really good artists, both black and white, but probably overall, in the mid to late 50's, it seems to me that the black artists prevailed. I think the genre Doo Wop helped them along. Many black artists during that time period either sang rhythm and blues or Doo Wop, which I really enjoy listening too because of the harmony. I have a pretty good Doo Wop collection from my parents, who must have really liked it also. However, there was always something special about James Brown. Did you know that after his death, there was a big mess within his family over his estate, especially his song rights?
I'm just seeing your last two replies! I remember the Spaniels; I liked a few of their songs. Pookie is called by name in this novelty song (maybe he's leading), which was out of the norm for them but is so fun and so cool (pardon the pun)! They fit the name of several liquors and cigarettes into the song.

You would have loved the shows at the Apollo. Did you ever see Showtime At The Apollo. Aspiring artists who take the stage indeed feel like they've made it if they aren't gonged off. James Brown's life was a mess, period. It amazes me that such talented people can make messes of their lives like that. I don't think I knew that Buddy Holly and The Crickets were the first white group to play there. Gone way too soon!

No, I have never see that show, but maybe I can locate a recording online. I remember reading about Pookie Hudson, the lead singer for the Spaniels before going out on his own. He had a mellow voice. I put my parents songs into order by title hoping to someday buy a Wurlitzer jukebox, the one with the bubbles around it. I was offered one that had been completely restored, but he wanted $8000. I have seen them for less, so I thought I would wait it out until another one was available for less. Maybe I missed the boat and should have bought that one.

When I was in New York, I went to see the Apollo Theater. I was just drawn to it. James Brown was a stage performer with his dancing while singing and when he sang "Please, Please, Please" and drop to his knees and his backup man from The Fabulous Flames would remove his cape was just so cool back in those days. My parents had 3 of his albums.

Listen to the crowd:

My good friend sent this to me. This young man sounds so much like Marvin Gaye that it's uncanny! Best thing is that he's not imitating Marvin, it's just how he sounds. He doesn't sound like Marvin when he sings at a lower register however. This tells me he has range and is versatile. He said that Snoop Dogg changed his life, so Snoop must've "discovered" him or at least furthered his career. Sweet, sweet voice.

When it comes to soul, then Patti is my all time favorite.

Running hot
Running cold
I was running into overload
That was extreme.
I took it so high so low so long
There was no where to go like a bad dream.
Somehow that wires uncrossed
The table were turned
Never knew I had such a lesson to learn.
I'm feeling good from my hat to my shoe
Know where I am going and I know what to do
I've tidied up my point of view
I've got a new attitude.

Talk about infectious energy and attitude!

Delta blues are the purest of the blues. I can't help smiling at Sam's songs.
I think he made this one up as he sang it, hahaha! He had a very unusual
style of guitar playing. Apparently his woman wasn't keeping a clean house.
Listen to the words of this entire song. It is just too funny.

Back when the groups of the 'British Invasion' covered old Blues standards.
Most groups did a good job and directed a generation to explore the roots of Blues.
I enjoy both.
