Stanley showed up yesterday

I didn't notice that he gnawed at himself and it's both legs, and he only seems weak in the hind legs.
Sounds like it could be a back injury. Maybe he was hit by a car or got into a fight or had a bad fall or someone kicked him or threw him. Hopefully, it isn't severe and will heal ok in a week or so.

Trying to catch him and put him in a carrier is an open inviatation to getting bitten and scratched. The local animal control doesn't handle cats since they aren't licensed in New York State. I think the neighbor that feeds these cats would be the likely one to assume the responsibility.
Talk to the neighbors if you can. Perhaps a live trap. If the cat is suffering, he'd be better off put down. My local animal control doesn't handle cats or ferals either. They will however if the animal is injured, appears sick or suffering. And from your post, this is clearly the case here.

Have you called them to ask for details? This cat is ill or injured. If you have called them, I'd call again with specific details of the case. These so called owners have probably lost their rights if they are refusing to help an ill animal. There are things you can do!

At this point I'm trying to figure out what your goal was of your original post here. To post a cat is suffering but there is nothing you can do? I don't know. It's rather maddening.

As far as your vet goes, just because you don't have a pet now doesn't mean you will in the future. And no one here is asking you to pay for this poor animal. There are alternatives. If I saw an animal suffering in my area, I'd do something. As stated, try animal control but you seemed to not respond to that. No they don't handle cats, even strays and ferals. That's the case in my area. UNLESS the animal is ill or suffering. They WILL handle that call.

Poor Stanley isn't burdened by all of the information we have about his situation.

I would put out a bowl of water and food, and try to make a comfortable spot on the stoop for him to hang out if he chooses.

Check FB for local animal rescue groups that might be able to provide a more permanent solution.

Good luck to you both.
Good idea!!

He can't be suffering to much. Usually a sick cat won't eat. He gobbled down some deli chicken I offered to him.
I found my 12 year-old cat panting in the garage and took him to the vet right away. It was diabetes. For the last year or two of his life I gave him insulin shots twice a day and took him to the vet for blood work about once a month to keep the dosage right.

Gradually his legs got like Stanley's so he was walking on his heels and sometimes he would simply fall down for no reason. I had to start feeding him on the floor rather than the table he had always preferred. Finally his blood sugar got wild and he would become almost comatose for hours at a time.

His last day was a Thanksgiving. He wolfed down an enormous pile of shredded turkey, went into his box (like the picture) went to sleep and just didn't wake up.

Deb, I wouldn't want you to go through all this. If he hasn't had his rabies shot and he bites you he'll have to be put down and you will have to be monitored yourself. With or without care, he doesn't have a lot of time left. If it were me I would put out food, water, a nice place to sleep and let nature take its course. I don't think he's in pain.

Exactly my thoughts.

I would be glad to help pay for treatment for Stanley if you would like to start a Go Fund Me page. Maybe the Vet would make a house call, if you were able to collect enough money. Just send me the link.

I hate seeing any animal suffer. If he was here, I would have my son capture him. He’s good at doing that.

I don't know where Stanley is or when he'll show up. I may never see him again or he may be on my doorstep tomorrow.

BTW - my vet never got back to me about this.
My son throws a big beach towel over any stray cats that he sees around his house. Dogs, if they have a collar on, he will give them a treat and then put a leash on them until he can locate the owner. If not, he takes them to the lost animal dept. our SPCA has set up.

If someone captures Stanley and takes him to the Vet, please contact me and I will donate towards his care.

I will as well ...... the little guy needs some help !

Yeah, it is rather funny. Like they'll wake up later...........
But then, we don't say a person "Died;" we'd rather say "Passed." Like they just walked by........ :giggle:
Or, "Gone," like they'll be back. :giggle:
Reminds me of when Mr. R and I had dinner at a Mexican restaurant Saturday night. A song came on,in Spanish, and we KNEW the song but couldn`t figure out what it was. Asked our server and she said "I will find out." Then she came back and said "It`s The Night Chicago Passed Away". So funny.

Exactly my thoughts.
How can anyone know if this poor animal is in pain? Apex predators hide their discomfort very well. Also, he is helpless to defend himself against any predators. I think it is the epitome of

cruelty to just leave him to his fate. Why not start a go fund me page, as old man suggested? Both he and RGP have stated they would donate. Deb, I can empathise if you are

experiencing financial constraints, I just returned to work after a prolonged absence. But financial help would seem to be available. Please help this dear little cat, it is the Christian thing to do, as my animal loving Gramma would have said.🐈
