Sturgis, SD....the next CV surge??

The annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis has started, and over 250,000 bikers are expected to participate. These people will be coming from all parts of the nation, they will be partying hard, for several days, while ignoring all CV recommendations, and then returning home. If present statistics are accurate, several dozen...perhaps hundreds, of these riders will have had exposure to the virus, and they will pass it along to many of their fellow bikers, before returning home where they will expose even more people.

I won't be surprised to see a marked rise in infections, in late August, all over the nation, as a result of this gathering.

Doubt that it will be reported, if indeed it happens.
 
I went to both Daytona and Sturgis one time each on my Kawasaki 900. Sturgis was huge and way far out for me. Too many drugs and fights for a simple guy like me. Daytona was nice. I only saw a few fights.
 
I have never been to Sturgis and have no desire to go myself. However I would imagine the impact may be less than one would expect because I think it's largely an outdoor gathering. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
 
We've camped near Sturgis few years ago.
Lovely wild country,,lot of ATV trails to ride.

Meant a man who was panning for gold.
He took the time to show us how it was done.
Our friend managed to get 2 or 3 flakes of gold when she tried it.

Very surprised to see others along side a shallow stream panning for gold.
 
Anybody stupid enough to deliberately venture into that petri dish will deserve whatever comes their way. But I do feel sorry for the people unfortunate enough to live there. It's like they are being bombarded by enemy bombs; what's the difference?
 
Yes it is on and masks are few 250,000 people expected to attend. There are sanitizing stations on the streets. I wonder what the citizens of Sturgis are thinking.
 
The rally is in Sturgis every year and usually has many more thousands of people. Sturgis only has 7000 population and counts on this rally to keep the town and people going. I am sure they are not only fine with it, but happy.
 
A report on the news, yesterday, said that this rally brings in over 60 million dollars/yr. to Sturgis and the surrounding communities. It is that areas largest boost to their economies. However, this year, with this virus, I would imagine that most of the locals are hoping that half of them aren't in the hospital by late August.
 
The virus doesn't care if you regard yourself to be a tough biker. It doesn't care if you don't believe in it. It's an opportunistic, highly transmissible infection seeking vectors to spread and propagate itself. It's done exactly that at much smaller social, church, and family gatherings. The prospect of a quarter million, unmasked and undistanced individuals gathering together and throwing caution to the winds is likely to make this a super-spreader event...
 
We had planned to go to Sturgis this year, back before Covid interrupted our plans for every adventure we had been looking forward to for 2020! 🤬

The lunacy of the folks who are attending just boggles my mind. This is unquestionably a super-spreader event in the making. I read an article that mentioned residents ineffectually attempting to get the rally cancelled....and who can blame them???

Yes, as I said above, the people I feel sorry for are the residents who are trapped in the midst of this stupidity. If I lived there, I'd get out of town ASAP.
 
I can't wait to see pics of big ole' biker guys with masks. I hope they all stay well. :)
