That lovely aroma....

I'm picking up on an almost Zen-like reward/feeling for you, Star?
It's hard to describe. I don't know from Zen, TBH.

The best way to describe it - the ocean calms my soul.

That's why I love to go on cruises. It's all about the ocean and almost not at all about the ports. Went on a 13 day transatlantic and was in heaven.

I could never live more than an hour from the beach. I don't have to go there all the time, just knowing it's there for me is often good enough.

What you describe is exactly me with gardens. I need to have growth all around me... trees, plants, flowers, shrubs.

When I was a kid we had a Karmelkorn shop on one corner of a downtown movie palace and a Planter's Peanuts on the other corner.

For me, the smells from those two stores are a part of my Christmas memories when we went downtown to shop and experience the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. I suppose that the young folks today will have memories of the mall or maybe online shopping when they get to be my age.
Johnson's caramel corn (pronounced carmel here in NJ) on the Ocean City boardwalk. pretty much mandatory purchase while walking the boards.

I'm strange, odd, maybe crazy. I know it; nobody has to point it out. But there are many technically "unpleasant" odors that make me have happy thoughts.

Mothballs. Most people find the smell unpleasant but it brings memories of my grandmas' houses. Holidays, spending the weekends or vacations being spoiled by two old ladies who thought I was perfect.

Diesel fumes. Memories of traveling around Europe as a teen, seeing wondrous things and having adventures. Later, memories of living in Turkey where life was very good.

Paste wax and shoe polish. Helping my dad wax the car and polish his shoes, hearing him tell me what a good helper I was.

Paint thinner. Helping my beloved grandpa clean his brushes at the end of a work day and getting a dime for my "salary".

Vinegar. My mom and grandma pickling things. Yum, yum, yum.

That fishy, salty, stinky aroma of salt flats, which meant we were getting nearer to the beach. Yay, we're almost there!

That underlying hint of aviation fuel, fumes and the smell of oil at the airport, train station or bus depot. VACATION!!!

Smoke from the fireworks. Acrid, but oh-so-worth-it.....

Pickling spice was, and still remains a favourite of mine!

Loved coming home from school to the house filled with the mouth-watering delight of pickling spice!

Could never get enough of that smell!
