The Commercial Made Me Do It

They have been advertising on TV all the time, Tim Hortons now has extra filling in their Boston Cream Donuts, extra apples in the Apple Fritters too.

I passed the coffee shop on my way to do taxes and stuck to my diet, no such luck on the way back. The commercial was spot on.

Maybe I'll check out the new and improved Glade next

Which commercial has drawn you in?

Obviously commercials that inform me what is wrong with my life and how by using their product my life will improve. Wait, that is practically every commercial on the planet. I guess I need a lot to be happy according to commercials?

We watch very little TV, and what we do watch we've prerecorded so zapping through commercials is why we miss so much. On the occasions though when we do watch TV my wife and I both have the habit of pressing the mute button when the commercials come on.

Just a point about commercials, is it me or has anyone noticed that the volume on commercials seem higher than the program that they are interrupting?

It seems to me that the programs are interrupting the commercials. They are so long, I often fall asleep during commercial breaks and miss the program entirely!

Edit: Sorry, I didn't answer the OP question. No, I have become very skeptical of any commercial trying to make me buy their product. All they want is money, money, money and will promote their product anyway they can to get mine. Ad agencies are diabolical! :devilish:

Lee, Sometimes you just have to indulge! Why not? You deserve it! Be a hedonist!

Been ad free streaming for a few years (10+), just recently started a free month of Hulu /w ads, I am amazed at the quality of commercials that are on, maybe other commercial channels have them (don't know). But I feel like they have dumbed their audience down somewhat, and are mostly biased towards somewhat questionable activities. That's just me being me.

Loud commercials. That's been the case for many years. So annoying.

Yes, they literally raise the volume on the commercials.

I remember reading an article about this, because I have vertigo problems, sometimes tinnitus also.

What that article said, was that, you know, you really should mute the commercials. As you listen to a show, over time, your hearing gets a little less and less sensitive. So, it gets harder and harder to hear. And you slowly wind up constantly increasing the volume.

It is really obnoxious that the government allows commercials to do this. Maybe no big deal for folks without hearing issues...but for me, it's not good. If it is particularly bad, I can actually get a bit dizzy from it.

I have complete deafness in left ear, right one does
pretty well, but also have severe tinnitus....what chaps
my behind is all the "breathy" audio on some shows...
you know where the man/woman just whispers, never
talking at full volume....I hate that...

so sorry to hear that. Vertigo is the big problem for me. Tinnitus only on occasion. But I really hate it, when it hits.

I have that problem myself. Not as serious but I either have to watch something on the big speakers and turn it up or have the subtitles on.

I was very interested in knowing about the breathy speeches they like to do nowadays so I read up on. There are many reasons behind it. Some directors think it's cool and fits the character. Sometimes sound engineers are given badly recorded audio that they have to clean up as best as they can. Sometimes boom mics aren't placed properly and the director doesn't want to do more takes. Sometimes they don't want to bother having lines redubbed. Sometimes softly spoken lines aren't meant to be heard for artistic reasons. I still do have subtitles on even when I can hear everything quite well, just in case.

Actors make a fortune if they do a commercial. Not sure why because it doesn’t make me more interested in the product. One actress made as much for one commercial than she did for five years on a popular sitcom. David Spade made enough to buy a house and you know that wouldn’t be cheap. They must pay Jon Hamm a fortune for his Uber Eats ads.

I kept seeing an ad for furniture and actually checked out the product. When we decided to update our LR we checked out Stressless and ended up ordering it.

There’s a commercial for Poise that is so annoying I stop making dinner and FF it.

Always has. The extra volume is supposed to reach the bathroom where they assume you've gone.

re donuts...

Here in Canada, Krispy Kreme was a huge failure. Too greasy by a mile. Now here in the largest city in Canada ( Toronto ) there are just 4 KK stores left. When Target tried to move into Canada, it only took the US company two years to declare bankruptcy. Why ? They assumed that the Canadian market was "just like the US market ". They were very wrong. Target USA was totally clueless about how to do business in Canada, they even overlooked our customer protections laws, and employment standards regulations. Dumb. JimB.
