When does the fall season begin for you? For most, it may be when the calendar turns to September 1st. For others in the U.S., it's the first day after Labor Day. Still, there may be some who say it's not official until the start of the autumnal equinox on the astronomical calendar, which this year is September 23rd. For me it's all three.

I've began to take down my summer decorations today & will start to clean out the garden/flower beds over the weekend. Labor Day will be our last summer hurrah with flags & a cookout. After that, I'll do my fall cleaning for the next week & then autumn decorations go up inside the house. As soon as the days are cooler with colder nights, gourds & pumpkins for outside. On the 23rd, I plan on having a dinner with a bonfire outside.

What do you like or enjoy doing during the fall?
 

We don't really get cooler days until late October now. When I was a kid we would get cooler days in September but that is no longer true. I remember going shopping for back to school and getting new jeans, longsleeve shirts and sweaters.

Now, I wear capris until end of October and sometimes in November. I love the fall and winter, they are my favorite seasons and they seem to get shorter and shorter.

I can feel my depression starting to lift knowing the cool cold days are coming.
 
I don't rush fall. Fall does not start right after Labor Day. Why people say that is beyond me, especially since it's sometimes still hot in the days following. This is from the article linked below:

I prefer warm weather too. But I do like the changing colors of the leaves on the trees. The air is clearer. Usually I buy something pretty to wear for the cool season which lifts my spirits about the whole thing. Pumpkins are pretty, hiking in fall is lovely. It's harder for me to find things I like about fall but I manage every year. :giggle:

It’s been the same here. The autumn chill is definitely in the air and while autumn officially starts in the 3rd week of September where I live, we generally regard the beginning of autumn after this long Labour Day weekend, when the kids go back to school. We appreciate that but appreciate it more mid October when all the leaves start changing colour.

Definitely always counted it from 20-21 September with the Farmers Almanac that gramps had.

School uniforms required the short sleeves shirt for girls with light uniform until end of September. Boys had to wear short pants and short sleeve shirts as well. Then it was all on either 3/4 sleeves for shirts or ling ones, depending on how we reacted to the cold 🤣🤣🤣 Sorry thought I'd thrown that bit in for fun.

What I really enjoy are the colour changing leaves. However, I dislike the early darkness creeping in until it's lights on from about 16:30 daily, depressing...

I've two gifted paintings out of a set of four. Spring and Winter. Never got Summer and Autumn. The couple who had picked our selection from our wedding registry ended up moving out the country due to the husband position in the Army, very suddenly. They send apologies in a card. No problems 🙂

I miss them two as the Autumn/Summer landscape were so amazingly beautiful.

My most memorable dates in September were the 7th and 11th. However, the latter was stolen by 2001, you know what happened...
 
I see summer waning into fall lately. What has been a rich green foliage in the summer, is now starting to fade. I saw one branch in a maple in fall colors but only one. Sometimes a maple will want to be the first to turn. The grass and weeds in the yard have slowed their growth. My tomato plants are starting to look like they are done for the year. I might start pulling them today.

For the seasons I follow the Celtic calendar, so I consider August 1st as the first stirrings of autumn, even though the weather here is usually still hot at that time. As with all seasons, I view autumn as a subtle transition. In fact, in the area I live it seems the most subtle of all seasonal transitions. The temps in early August can be in the 90s, but some trees start to show changing colors in their leaves, shadows get a bit longer, birds start eating a lot more at the feeders as they get ready for migration, etc.
 
Today the sky looked like fall was starting to come in. The high was only 72° F with big fluffy gray clouds overhead with blue skies peeking through every now & then. It will stay in the mid-70s until Tuesday & then the highs for the next week will be in the mid-60s & nights fluctuating between 56° & 48°. Soy beans have started to turn in the fields & just a few trees have some small color change.

My vet was out the other day & we both discussed how the horses are starting to get their winter coat already even though it's been hot with high dew points. She knew someone with a couple of ponies that have to be shaved because their coats were coming in so fast. That one caught me by surprise.

Guess the animals may know better than us what the weather holds. For me, I'm ready for cooler temps with sweaters & flannel shirts.
 
For the past couple of weeks, we've noticed the leaves of some trees are starting to
turn orange already.

The weather needs to be less humid for me to start feeling like autumn is here.
 
I can't wait for the dew point to go too. I think it will happen soon for us. Once that does, it will be pleasant outside once more.
