The Homeless....

Too complicated for many reasons. Drugs and alcohol probably at the top of the list. I get the sentiment though.
fair enough mavis....but they only want to rest their drugged bodies...not asking alot , is it !

Well, I live IN a church. :) It is 20 miles from Columbia. Not likely we can do much for the homeless. I have seen an increase in homeless begging there. In general do not think Churches should be solely responsible for transforming their environment to accommodate the homeless in a big way. The culture should take care of the homeless by getting money from the rich to pay for adequate housing and jobs.

But They DOnt Want housing and jobs dennis.....Just a shelter at night , thats all they ask...

That thought did occur to me at one time charry and I mentioned it to someone.
That person replied that some homeless folk are afraid of churches...I don't know why and wished I had asked the reason.
quite understandable jamala......they might be paranoid, as some are on drugs and could be hallucinating

Wouldn't that lead to .... cold days, rainy days, etc. ? Anytime they [homeless] want shelter ? How do you get them out at daybreak ? Who cleans up the mess if they do leave in the morning ? so-on & so-forth.
as in my quote to mavis rgp

Just opinion here but .... it seems to me the more "we" provide for them. The less likely they are/will be to "pull themselves up" and get off the street.

Yeah I know, I'm a horrible person , etc & so-on but. People need motivation , if we feed them, provide shelter, maybe some free clothing & so-on. They might just be perfectly happy . Doing without some things might just be motivation to get them going ?

It's an idea. I don't know what the solution is. I'm not sure how those very small houses with the communal toilets are going in my area. Haven't heard anything on the news lately about it. I think they are allowing people to take pets which is good.

My aunt ran a homeless shelter. (Not Mavis) There’s no easy answer, in fact a church wouldn’t be a church in a short time. It wouldn’t have any wiring, plumbing, pews or anything of value. Poop and pee everywhere! (Needles as mentioned too) I like to think I’m as sympathetic as they get but, these are just the facts. Tough issue to tackle, probably why it’s never been successfully tackled.

its just an overnight solution mavis.....not 24hrs, and most wouldnt arrive until late evening or midnight, wanting a hot mug of soup and a few hours kip, then they would be back on their way.....
i doubt if they would want to stay any longer !!!

Can't or choose not to ? If they truly cannot, then they very likely need to be institutionalized/housed on a permanent basis. {Re-open the asylums}
If they choose not to ? I really don't care how they get by.

I'll shorten a long story .... two sisters that I know well [one is now deceased] made it their mission to "help" two local homeless men. Even providing apartments, and jobs. Within six months [or less] both men were back living on the river bank .... what they preferred.

We cannot protect someone from themselves.

I respecetfully disagree .... Once they learn that this is a place of warmth / food, etc .... they will stay . IMO fight to stay.

I don't mean to take thread further off-topic, but must say I agree with you.

"The homeless" in this area know where to find every freebie imaginable- food, shelter, clothes, medical care, etc. while, as one local worded it, they have no incentive to do anything for themselves.
Don't mistake me for belonging to this political ideology overall, but I do agree with the concept "From each according to his ability.. to each according to his needs." It irks me to no end that the majority of these individuals (locally anyway) are perfectly capable of taking/holding JOBS.
