The Homeless....

Reagan emptied the mental institutions to save money.
It didn't start under Reagan, but before. I knew two of the plaintiffs in the case to release people from institutions. In 1979 the mental institutions began to empty and the streets of Madison, WI, where we were living at the time, became flooded with homeless. This was well over a year before the Carter/Reagan election. It was the courts who freed them, not an issue about money.

What a hot button topic. I feel for Brenda…she KNOWS what pain and hopelessness feels like. Those of us who have addicted or mentally ill family and friends know how complicated this all can be. There are many layers. Best thing to do is take a deep breath and help when and where we can. For the grace of God go I….

You are right ..... I do not care about those that refuse to do for themselves.

They want my help ? ... I'll send them the jobs open section from the paper.
lol...say no more !!!

Key word here is choose ..... If that is what they choose ? Then they are doing what they want ...... If it goes bad/turns hard for them ...... oh well.

Perhaps they should choose to work !

im so very happy and pleased that your are one of the Privileged rgp... That Have Had so much CHOICE in life ...

Gotta jump in here.
First... who knows what kind of life rgp has led and why should that matter?
Second...
Let me share a little something about me. Nothing privileged about it. I too was about as low as one can get in this life. (homeless and bumming around). That choice was mine and mine alone. Fell in love and made the change. I chuckle when you hear people saying they had it tough or a bad childhood and that's why their homeless. Hell, my wife started to live on her own when she was 16 and her mother passed and the family fell apart. Imagine... 16 and roaming the streets of NYC. Well, instead of turning to drugs or prostitution, or sleeping in doorways, she went ahead, found a job, got her GED and went on to a much better life. (that would be when she met me).
Nope, sorry, but the majority of these people CHOOSE the life they lead.

Now you are just being a smartass .... which means your argument is losing merit. This thread is not about me, but about a topic that is affecting us all .... and i have merely voiced my opinion on it.

I have a younger brother who I now know chooses this life. I have taken him in, spent money while he was in and out of jail, picked him up from hobo living and seen first hand the people he Chooses to be around. I love my brother with all my heart and will probably help him again, but I do know the second he is required to respect my home and my boundaries or lift a hand to help me with repairs or upkeep, he goes back to his "friends". I just went through this cycle with him and way too hurt and pissed to be objective at this time.

Why would any member respond with a Haha for my sharing something so painful going on in my life?

We don't ..... They do.... The first time they pickup and take an illicit party drug .... they made that choice .

One would have to be totally ignorant & living in a cave ....... to not know the ills of drugs today . So if one partakes & becomes addicted or dies ..... I don't care.
Oh Wow.......What A Statement !!!!

Expect your opinion to be commented upon, just like everyone else.

Oh I do, and if an asinine remark is all she [or anyone] can muster up , and disparaging my person makes their day ? Well for sure have at it, enjoy your day. It is more of a reflection on them ... than I.

I don't know you, so I don't know if your post is serious, but from many years experience locally that's NOT what they want.. if that was the goal, they could have that and much more at shelters.
I've lost track, but there are quite a few shelters in this area. Individuals can have 'a good night's sleep,' hot meals, access to medical care, free clothing, etc. Individuals can do laundry, take showers, get bus tokens, and there are social workers for anybody who wants to get help with problems.

The catch is shelters have RULES- individuals cannot drink alcohol or use drugs in the shelters (although they don't need to be clean/sober in order to go in). And that's also the reason many choose to live in homeless camps- while they can continue to use shelter services they don't need to live there under those rules.

As for churches- I have no idea.
JaniceM...nice post from someone else who 'Get's it'!

So you are saying that if or when you took that first 'hit', down in the back of your mind, you did not know you could become addicted? REALLY?
I don't think most people had that thought in mind... and especially not young people.

Drug use is getting younger and younger on average, even elementary school kids.
In this area, there've been cases where individuals involved in crimes, suicides, etc., were already struggling with addictions when 14-15 yrs old.
And now there's this: https://www.axios.com/local/des-moi...es-schools-stocking-naloxone-opioid-overdoses

So we must agree to disagree....even at 12, I knew right from wrong and understood what addition meant! I was born in 1950...

OK.
I was born in 1957, also knew right from wrong at 12, but as far as actual addiction I was clueless for a long time.
While the subject was addressed in 8th grade and 10th grade health classes, none of us kids had a personal way of relating to what we were taught.
