The sad story of the body in the forest and the child's body in the suitcase.

Five years ago the remains of a young woman were discovered in the Belanglo Forest south of Sydney.

This forest was the dumping ground of one of our most notorious serial killers, one Ivan Milat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backpacker_murders . Milat used to pick up hitch hikers and take them into the forest where he murdered them and buried them in shallow graves. Seven bodies were uncovered and eventually the police arrested Milat, he was convicted of the murders and is serving seven consecutive life sentences as well as 18 years without parole. He won't ever be a free man again.

The latest body could not have been down to Milat because from forensic assessment of the time of death, Milat was securely locked up. However he came from a family where at least one other member has committed a murder in the Belanglo so suspicion still fell on the Milats. The young woman's identity was unknown until very recently and she was known as Angel because of a T shirt found with the body.

This year a child's skeletal body was found in a suitcase on the side of a lonely road in South Australia. At first they didn't know whether it was a boy or a girl but clothing suggested a girl. She was judged to be about two years old. People feared that it might be the remains of a little boy named William Tyrrell who was snatched from his grandmother's house last year but that was quickly ruled out. William Tyrrell is still missing. http://www.smh.com.au/national/fear...en-abducted-from-kendall-20140916-10hqb0.html

Recently there has been a break through. The child's remains were identified as belonging to Khandalyce Kiara Pearce and DNA showed that she was the infant daughter of the Belanglo Angel, now identified as Karli Pearce-Stevenson, though they were separated by 1000 km and found 5 years apart. The mother was only 20 and she had taken her daughter with her, leaving her family in Alice Springs to travel south to make a new life.

She was not on the list of missing persons. Her family initially reported her missing but later withdrew the report because there has been some contact that convinced them that she was alive and well and just didn't want to be contacted. This is still a mystery.

However, the police do have some suspects. Here is the latest news on this very sad case:

Police confirmed that both mother and daughter had been brutally murdered but the time and circumstances are still unknown. Detectives said both Ms Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce suffered violent deaths.

Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s remains were discovered in NSW’s Belanglo Forest in 2010 and the little girl’s body was found on the Karoonda Highway in South Australia early this year.

Police said they were looking at the possibility there was more than one person responsible for the murders. The officers said while the community response was “overwhelming” they cautioned people to be careful about spreading misinformation.

Pearce-Stevenson was last seen driving near Coober Pedy with Khandalyce in November 2008. In 2008 she left to work and travel around Australia with Khandalyce. The father of Khandalyce has been ruled out as a suspect for now.

Australian police said Wednesday a young child’s skeleton found in a suitcase earlier this year was the daughter of a woman whose bones were found 1,100 kilometres (684 miles) away five years ago. Over the next year, contact between the two and their family started to become less frequent, and in September 2009 Pearce-Stevenson’s mother filed a missing person report.

According to 9 News Australia the NSW and SA Homicide Squads are working closely to complete the picture of Karlie’s life, particularly since the birth of Khandalyce in 2006. Blood samples from her mother were used to create a DNA profile, which detectives in NSW linked to the remains of woman found Belanglo State Forest in late 2010.

Information from an anonymous caller led police to photos of Khandalyce wearing a pink dress and with a handmade quilt, identical to those found in the suitcase at Wynarka.

Police were able to identify Khandalyce by matching a previous blood sample to DNA from the bones found in the suitcase. Describing the lines of inquiry as “very strong” and the searches “very productive”, Det-Supt Willing says police still believe people who knew the young mum and daughter personally “hold the key to their death”.

He said the mother and daughter visited Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Canberra at different times.

‘We are appealing for assistance from the community to help us identify their friends and associates as they travelled throughout Australia, as well as landlords, motels, caravan parks or campsites where they stayed during this time, ‘ Det Supt Willing said.

A very sad ending for this loving mum and her toddler, they can at least be together now thanks for DNA ..I do hope they find this heartless killer (s)

I'll keep you up to date with developments. I think the police are getting a lot of responses on Crimestoppers. That's how they got a lead on the identity of the little girl. Someone recognised the dress and quilt found in the suitcase.

Sadly no-one knows what has happened to little William Tyrrell.

I hope they catch this murderer!

I fail to understand why in the world people, who have been given the gift of life, would take away another person's gift of life.

Let us know. The family must be devastated, of course, bless them.

Stories of this nature for sure break the heart, just this month we've had too many but the two that ran on the news solved were of an 9 week old infant, and another quite local to my area, just a county over, where an 11 y/o was missing since Aug of last year was recently discovered in a freezer. This story has been on the news for a couple of weeks now, just sickening. I'm only mentioning it because it's local, there's just so many of These sorts of stories for me to want to bring them here every time one of its nature comes over the airwaves.

I could tell you a few that would break your heart, literally, not to mention really upset you and perhaps, even one or two that may keep you awake at night. But, what would be the point? We all know what goes on out there in the world, but what a lot of people do not get to see or hear is how depraved some people really are. When some things that happened are so intolerable that it makes one vomit and your emotions then make you so enraged that you begin to think like the monsters that commit these crimes, it's time to take a break from what has caused your emotional upset. However, the problem is that you can't. Giving these people any additional time at all to cover their tracks or get away is too long. Time is always of the essence.

It's a tragic case, how on earth can someone kill a little girl (plus the mother)great news that one has been arrested, surprise ,surprise, he is an inmate.

Bits and pieces keep coming out. The man charged with the murder of the mother has been located in the Belanglo Forest by his phone records and he was in a relationship with the woman who appears to have used her identity to draw money from her account.

I'm very interested in the way the police are sieving through all of the bits of information to track people down and make a case against them.

http://www.smh.com.au/national/dani...ephensons-identity-fraud-20151029-gklz45.html

They are not yet saying anything about the death of the little girl.

The police are urging the people who used her card to come forward, warning that they will be tracked down in any case.
I presume they need someone to turn police witness to find out who murdered the little girl and get a conviction.

Charges have now been laid for the death of the little girl. Same killer as the mother.

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson's accused murderer Daniel Holdom charged over murder of toddler Khandalyce Kiara Pearce

The man charged with Karlie Pearce-Stevenson's murder has now also been charged with the murder of her daughter Khandalyce, who was allegedly killed just days later.

Daniel Holdom, 41, was arrested at Parramatta police station this morning. Holdom has been refused bail by Parramatta Local Court and the matter adjourned until January 28 at the Central Law Courts in Sydney. Speaking from Parramatta at one of two conferences held by New South Wales and South Australian police this afternoon, Detective Superintendent Mick Willing said Khandalyce was murdered just days after her mother.

"We will be alleging in court that Khandalyce was murdered in New South Wales shortly after the murder of Karlie," Detective Superintendent Willing said. "I'm talking a number of days."

South Australian Detective Superintendent Des Bray said Khandalyce's body was dumped in a suitcase days after she was murdered in 2008 on the side of the Karoonda Highway in the Murray Mallee and remained there until it was found earlier this year.

Police had previously wanted to speak to a man who was earlier seen with the suitcase, but Detective Superintendent Bray said the man was now seen as "largely irrelevant".

"If we knew who he was, we would still talk to him, but we don't think he has any bearing on the case," Detective Superintendent Bray said.

Detective Superintendent Willing said it was a "very intense investigation" and police had followed up a lot of leads. He said despite confirming the murder had happened in NSW, officers would continue to work with police in South Australia and other jurisdictions and the investigation was ongoing.
"We would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance," Detective Superintendent Willing said.

"We would not have been able to lay the charges we have laid without the assistance of the public. Karlie and Khandalyce's family were notified of today's events earlier today and have indicated they welcome the news. Our thoughts remain with them."

He encouraged anyone who had information about the matters who had not been in touch with the police to contact police now.

Murder charge 'very much welcome news', family says

Commissioner for Victim's Rights Michael O'Connell read a statement on behalf of Khandalyce's family.

"This is very much welcome news," he said. "It is welcomed because those who love Khandalyce want her killer called to account for such a despicable crime. "It is also welcomed because until now, Khandalyce's grandfather has worried that somewhere there was a child killer or child killers at large, so other children may not be safe."

He said Khandalyce's grandfather also thanked police for their "dedication and commitment" and for their support.
"Homicide is a most heinous crime, Karlie's and Khandalyce's family and friends have had their lives suddenly and horribly disrupted," Mr O'Connell said.
"Nothing has prepared these people for their suffering. For them, life will never be the same."

Cold case murders linked by Crime Stoppers calls

Holdom was charged in October with murdering Ms Pearce-Stevenson in or near the Belanglo State Forest in December 2008.
Khandalyce's skeletal remains were discovered in July this year after being dumped in a suitcase more than 1,000 kilometres away from where her mother's remains had been found.

Breakthrough from Crime Stoppers

The 1,267th and 1,271st callers to Crime Stoppers provided the critical information that helped police working to identify the remains of Khandalyce Kiara Pearce put the pieces of the puzzle together.

Detectives in South Australia and New South Wales were able to link the two cold case murders after two separate calls to Crime Stoppers.
Both Khandalyce and her mother were reported missing in the Northern Territory on September 4, 2009, by Ms Stevenson-Pearce's mother, but police said the report was later withdrawn.

Ms Pearce-Stevenson was a single mother and had moved away from her family with Khandalyce between 2006 and 2008, intending to travel and work.
She was last seen driving a car with Khandalyce on the Stuart Highway near Coober Pedy on November 8, 2008.

Police said Ms Stevenson-Pearce was aged 20 at the time while Khandalyce was aged two. Earlier this year new photos of Khandalyce were found on the Facebook page of Hazel Passmore, an ex-girlfriend of Holdom. It is understood police will allege Ms Passmore was the same woman who impersonated Ms Pearce-Stevenson in 2010.

Police have also said Ms Pearce-Stevenson's bank account was used to access almost $100,000 and her phone used to contact family to make it look like she was still alive long after she was dead.

So a thief kills a mom and child for money?

What was the deal with the female keeping a picture of the deceased mom and child? -photo for future use/fraud or something that might resemble a conscience?

No idea about that woman. She hasn't ben charged with anything to do with the murders but the fraudlent collection of money is something else.
Perhaps she has made a deal with the police and agree to turn state's witness for indemnity. I suppose that they would be more interested in getting the murder convictions.
