The Ugly Truth About Avocados and Avocado Oil

Mexican drug cartels have become heavily involved in the avocado industry, primarily in Michoacán, Mexico. They have diversified from only drug trafficking to also extorting avocado farmers, controlling supply chains, and using violence to profit from the lucrative "green gold" trade. AKA blood avocados, at least here in North America. Not something you hear much about in the news.
Same thing is happening in Greece and Italy with Olive oils

Oh yes, 1/2 an Avocado can cost you 150 calories. That sure bumps up the 'healthy' salad stats like crazy.

Depends on what is healthy for you.

If you are trying to lose weight, sure, go easy on avocados, they are calorie dense.

I am in healthy weight range so a healthy salad to me is one full of nutritious ingredients. I include avocado in that.

Avocados have to be just so to be good. I personally love them…but it is hard to find good ones these days. They use a lot of water to grow…so that is a problem.

I watched the whole video, and i really like Dr. Berg. What he is mainly talking about is not that an avocado is bad, but that once it is processed, then it can be unhealthy. He explains at the end that an avocado is a healthy source of good oil, you just have to get good avocados to start with.
He explains that it is ripened with a gas, which is why it can look and feel perfect, but is almost rotten inside. I buy my avocados green and then let them sit on the kitchen counter until they are ripe. If I buy more than one, I put them in the refrigerator and take out one at a time to ripen it and eat it when it is ripe.

He is very correct about the avocado oil having other oils mixed in, and I have also read that this is sometimes true about olive oil as well. Unless you are getting pure extra virgin olive oil, it can have other oils added in. It should show on the labels, but he said that sometimes it does not show on the avocado oil.

As far as the guacamole from fast food places, I don’t think I have ever had any, and don’t remember it if I have, but I am not surprised if it had green peas and other stuff in it that does not belong in guacamole.

Hmm. I buy my avocados green also, with the stem intact. I let them ripen then put them in the frig. I didn't know you could put them in the frig before ripening. Thanks, I'll try that.
When watching calories I have made guacamole with mashed canned peas added. Done right it tastes very good but wouldn't work for keto diets ( I don't think)

Me neither Lois...my X loved them he would eat them every day if he could....
The avocado (just like a pear) needs to be perfect to be eaten. If it is still a little bit green, it is bitter, and if it is too ripe, it is mushy and has a disgusting taste.
It has to be where you can gently push the skin and it gives just a little, and should be a beautiful yellow-green when you cut it open. Only then do you get that amazing avocado flavor. That is why it is better to buy them when they are green and check them each day until they are ripe.

If your husband ate them often, he should have known how to pick the best ones, @hollydolly ; so maybe the taste just does not appeal to you.
