The UK Sugar Tax.

I never agree with Osborne. Yet the government - the NHS - has stretched its budgets to have to pay for self-induced illnesses that come from obesity (smoking, alcohol).

I doubt this will help much though. There would have to be a massive tax placed on sugary foods to keep people from buying them. And it isn't just sugar making people obese. Take a trip to a chippy.

I probably shouldn't say anything since I'm an American, but I'm sort of recalling what an English friend said to me once ...

I can see a government taxing sugar and other unhealthy food ingredients if it's paying for the health care of its citizens.

You're allowed. I'm American also, but I live in the UK.

I wish I could live in the UK. I've visited England enough to think I would like it; I think I would really love Scotland but have no personal experience of it, just books (anything from H.V. Morton to Rosamunde Pilcher).

I love the idea of living on the coast there but I've always lived in the South, so ...

Scotland is gorgeous. The weather could use improvement though - but that's the only thing.

Laurie, I don't understand your post--probably just as well? I grew up with the sheep jokes. Lolol. I am half welsh after all.

The leek is the Welsh national emblem, alongside the daffodil. Tends to worn more by men, particularly at sporting occasions. In the context I was using it it was a play on words with leak, and I wasn't suggesting anything really untoward!

The English once put me in prison for wearing one on St David's Day!

17 degrees in Braemar yesterday, some people are hard to please!

I live in the wettest area of Scotland. Last summer I believe we had a high temp of 20 and never once put on shorts. I don't call 17 warm but it's good if it's sunny. I'm forgiving about all the drizzle and cool temps and midges as those are the only negatives I can find about Scotland.

The Australian Goverment is talking about the sugar tax as we speak ..It is being pushed by Jamie Oliver ..and I'm all for it When I was digonised with diabetes I was horrified by the amount of sugar in simple things like sauce ..Yes I know the tax is not about the amount of sugar in a product but hopefully it will lead to manufactures putting less sugar in soups ,sauces ect ..to give low sugar users a choice at the supermarket ..as far as cool drinks go I don't buy or drink them ..if I want a fizzy drink I buy soda water ( the lowest sodium content ) and I add fresh lemon juice to flavour ..no sugar

Here, they would just pass the tax on to the consumer as a price increase. I have little expectation of manufacturers doing much to benefit their customers.

My Wife and I had a lovely holiday in Braemar with Shearings a couple of years ago.
Had a lovely time, and it is really gorgeous and SWEET there. (keeping to topic) ;)
Went on a day trip to Aberdeen, which was very nice to do also.
I wouldn't actually have a holiday there though.

Scotland gets many millions of tourists every year. Many are Amerians seeking their roots. And many go to Edinburgh and that's it. The west of Scotland is best especially all the islands.

Why does something like bread need sugar??? I bake bread and I don't put sugar in it.

I buy a peanut butter that has no sugar.

I never put sugar in bread either.
I went to Whataburger and ordered the salad with grilled chicken because I was trying very hard not to eat white starches. I took it home and squeezed lemon on it and ate it. Later online I discovered the salad had potato starch listed in it's ingredients. Made me so mad. WTH? Why put the dang potato starch in it?

A lot of restaurants now put their nutrition online. Sometimes I look it up after the fact and can't believe how bad it is!

That was the day I pretty much decided just to eat at home. I really prefer it anyway. Yes..it's like they WANT to make you fat and sick.

I never buy soda with sugar or energy drinks so it won't affect me. I believe we have 2 years yet.

They could quadruple the price of chocolate and it wouldn't stop me! Only the calories.

Don't you worry Annie.
Now they have started with this sugar lark, sweets, chocolate, cakes in fact anything with sugar in it will be taxed up to the hilt.
America and everywhere else will follow.
You just mark my words.

My husband thinks it will work. I don't. Many poor people with a limited budget will still buy sweets and if they cost more they might buy less of the healthy foods in order to be able to have the sweets.

Price would never stop me when I need a sweet fix no matter what the cost just as it wouldn't have stopped me smoking. (I quit for other reasons).
