This Halloween Madness is Pretty Sad!

You know back in the 50s and 60s little kids went door to door for Halloween. Yet, today, it seems that Halloween has become a major holiday. Some people spend a small fortunate decorating their front lawns. When I go grocery shopping I see boxes upon boxes of Halloween candies piled up along the wall. Candies are no good for kiddies because they cause tooth decay. Maybe the dentists love them but then who really loves dentures when your 40 year old?

There are all sorts of wars going on in this world. Maybe Halloween makes some folks forget what is really important. I don't know?

I know where you're coming from, John. It seems that, not so very long ago, the Halloween thing was a fairly homespun, kid-oriented local event. As often as not, costumes were home made using whatever was available. Some would decorate around their homes in a tasteful, seasonal sort of way using corn shocks, pumpkins, gourds, chrysanthemums, etc. There was, of course, the ubiquitous carved jack-o-lantern but nothing remotely like the garish, lame inflatable ghosts, witches, and who knows what that we see today.

Then there was the annual airing of a (one) Peanuts/Charlie Brown Halloween special. Now, with streaming, one can watch an endless array horror movies and Halloween themes Hallmark chick flicks almost continuously throughout the month of October.

It seems that in a few short years the Halloween tradition has gone from something rather "cute" to a hideous commercial nightmare. Sign of the times.

I agree that holidays in general have become too commercialized and way too long but I believe that is on us and how we choose to celebrate/observe them.

Every kid today deserves to have the same opportunities that we did, even if they sometimes feel that we are a bit corny or lame.

Never miss an opportunity to make a memory with and for the people that you love. ❤️

When I was a little kid, Halloween was a major holiday, second only to Christmas. Or maybe tied in 1st place with Christmas. Wearing costumes to school, begging for candy, and a spooky atmosphere about it. It couldn't be any more fun. I suspect that adults going all out for Halloween is in remembrance of its importance to them in their earlier life.

My neighbor erected the most real looking skeleton I have ever seen on his front lawn, the only unrealistic thing about it, is that it is 12 feet tall. Every time I drive by it I get the creeps (the good kind of creeps).

Right across the street, there is a house that is always decorated for Halloween. Each year they have more things. Now their porch is so crowded, it reminds me of a New York City street. There's the 12 foot skeleton. They have had that one for years. The 10 foot or so, deranged looking clown (That I hate, since I loved clowns as a child). They have Freddy Krueger, some kind of deranged looking nun, a coffin, and some other things. It doesn't bother me, except for the damn clown. I have always hated that a loveable happy character from my childhood, has been turned into a demented deranged killer.

You can't be a major holiday, if you don't have a commercial tie-in. What do you just have to buy for Armistice Day? Halloween's tie-in is the candy industry and costume industry.
Lately, Halloween porch decorating has become 'monster' sized, with large inflatable characters. Halloween is a night of frivolity. I doubt trick or treaters will have an impact on any wars.
