This is the WORST of times!!!!!!!!

I'm no historian. But I have noticed that whatever era we are in is the WORST OF TIMES. OMG!! If you are a "senior" , you lived through assassinations, wars, bombings, shootings, mass death, etc. Just look at the history we've seen. As bad as the world's situation is, we lived through things. I feel what is needed is trust in our fellow mankind.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way".

Dickens wrote those words in the 1850s. Seems that things haven't changed much in 160 years.

Given the world's current situation, I feel that what is needed is trust in the Lord, love for our neighbor, and a healthy skepticism toward mankind.

I have long since stopped trusting in any "lord" when innocent humans & animals are being burnt alive in fires, drowned in floods & mudslides, buried under earthquakes, murdered & tortured for stupid political & criminal reasons, etc etc. I go along with caring for ones neighbor & being skeptical of mankind & agree with most of the Judeo-Christian values as long as they include sexual & racial respect & equality. & try to be optimistic & look for bright spots amidst the chaos.

It's ironic, but it seems to me that the "worst of times" (war, weather disasters, fires, mass murders, etc.) brings out the absolute best in people. That's when the human spirit shines... giving, sharing, working together, etc. Unfortunate, but true.

I have lived through WW2 and everything since, including South Yemen, the Gulf, the Falklands and Northern Ireland (I thank The Good Lord that I missed Afghanistan) but I honest'y think the Cuban missile crisis was the worst.

I said my final good byes to my wife when I left for work each morning (we lived on a front line Atlantic coast anti-submarine base and she refused to leave. Vers will know the futility of arguing!).

I agree whole heartedly with all the opinions that have come before me in this thread. Many people here use their words so much better than I do. I feel people often believe "how can it get much worse than this?" But, nevertheless we persist.
Look at how often people look back at other eras and think "Things were much better then". I think hindsight is not always 20/20. For me, I think some things are scarier now. but that is just my feeling.

All I can say is......good luck with the non-belief, being optimistic and looking for bright spots. However, during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, there will be more of the "bright spots".

As for myself, I'm a "Believer" and always will be, but am also in the middle of optimism and pessimism. IOW, I'm more of a "reality" type person.

It is both the best and worst of times, as always.

Of course that varies for different situations.

My motto this year: It is what it is.

I grew up during the '60's which seemed like a renaissance. As a civilization, we were making great steps forward towards enlightenment humanity understanding and equality. Today, by contrast, feels like the dark ages.
