Ukraine war. Putin's mercenaries revolting?

Putin is ruthless! He will do whatever is necessary to stop and kill those who oppose him. I believe he will nuke them or where they live if he feels it necessary. I fear for their lives, brave souls they are...

Russia does have a history of treating its own armies and soldiers very very cruelly.
Yet surely anything that weakens them , such as this in-fighting bodes well for Ukraine.
Only my opinion, but I guess Putin does not have the spirit of his people with him in this Ukraine conflict.

I admit I'm a little fuzzy (no pun intended) about these Wagner people. Supposedly, it's a large private, well armed group of 25,000+??? Russia has used them before, with cries of wholesale atrocities. Considering their past, I don't believe they are the ideal saviors for Mother Russia. If this becomes a full-fledged rebellion, you have to wonder whose finger is on the Russian nukes.
Oh god that IS a worry.

If you're speaking of the Wagners, they are THUGS. The head of it even looks like some of my neighbors, thick headed peasants. Russia needs a total overhaul, not just changing one maniac for another.

I've watched the BBC all morning and now I know a little more than I did, which is not saying a lot. BBC coverage has been pretty much non-stop while American networks are covering this story along with other stories.

It's very interesting to watch history possibly being made in Russia and scary as well.

  • JUST IN: Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin says he is turning his forces
  • around from a march toward Moscow shortly after the Belarusian government claimed President Alexander Lukashenko had reached a deal with Prigozhin to halt the march.
  • Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to punish those behind an “armed uprising” after the head of the Wagner private military company launched an apparent insurrection, claimed control of military facilities in two Russian cities and warned his troops could head for Moscow.
  • Prigozhin on Friday accused Russia's military leadership of killing his fighters in a strike on a Wagner camp, which the Russian defense ministry has denied.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia's "weakness" has been exposed, with a Ukrainian defense spokesperson calling it a "sign of the collapse of the Putin regime."CNN
Reuters-Video obtained by Reuters showed troop carriers and two flatbed trucks each carrying a tank driving 30 miles (50 km) beyond Voronezh, more than half way to Moscow, where a helicopter fired on them.

Prigozhin, whose private army fought the bloodiest battles in Ukraine even as he feuded for months with the military top brass, said he had captured the headquarters of Russia's Southern Military District in the city of Rostov without firing a shot.

Rostov serves as the main rear logistical hub for Russia's entire invasion force in Ukraine.

What kind of deal, I wonder. It can't be good.

Where are the retreating troops going?

The question is are 'retreating' Wagner troops going back to where they came from or are they going somewhere else? A shift of 25K troops could make a difference some where on the Ukraine front.

If Pregozhin is joining forces with Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, then east. And yes, that would be a huge shift and a significant threat to the Ukrainian capitol.

Well that didn't last long. But I'll bet it's not over.

I always thought Lukashenko was sympathetic to Putin.

Where are the mercenaries going? I guess after turning from Moscow, they'll be back to Rostov. Just guessing.
Yes, he is. His sympathies lie with the powerful, though, so they're fickle.

You guessed right. But I think there's gonna be a Chapter 2.

I was just listening to BBC World Service radio and it appears that Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko brokered a deal with Putin and Prigozhin that involves the Wagners returning to Belarus, not Ukraine.

This has alarmed the Poles who fear a Belarussian invasion. Surely Putin wouldn't be so foolish as to invade a NATO country, or would he?

IMO, Putin is possibly a sick man and may not have long to live. He may not care about the damage he could inflict on the Russian people. He cares nothing about the trauma he inflicts on the Ukrainians and I doubt he would care about the Poles.

I suspect Prigozhin sold his Wagner people out... He probably took a lot of money and safety in Belarus because he didn't see a clear path to winning. He may be back... who knows. Left most of his army to join the Russians or escape on their own. I would not be sure the Wagner people will do very well, Russian and Putin know how to deal with folks they don't trust, may follow Stalin's example... No heroes in this thing.

It could give Ukraine a bit of a reprieve, but so long as Putin is in power I don't see the Russians giving up, just retrenching. And I fear that when Putin does lose power whoever comes next won't be any better.
