US bases in Canada

Can anyone confirm that US currently has zero military bases in Canada?

I am aware of just two military sites in Australia; Pine Gap in Northern Territory, and Naval Communication Station (Harold E. Holt) in Exmouth, Western Australia. Are these classified as military bases?

Pine Gap is run by United States intelligence community and the WA station is run by US Navy personnel.

There are several US military units stationed at Canadian bases, primarily as part of joint defense efforts between the United States and Canada through NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command). Here are the key US military units stationed in Canada:
  1. Detachment 2, First Air Force: This unit is located at CFB North Bay in Ontario, Canada. It consists of active duty uniformed members including aerospace control and warning operators, communications personnel, personnel specialists, knowledge operations manager, and a medical liaison
    3
. The detachment is integrated into various squadrons and directorates of 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base North Bay.
  2. 1 Air Force, Detachment 2 of the United States Air Force: This unit is also stationed at CFB North Bay, which is the center for NORAD operations in Canada
    1
    .
  3. Canadian Forces Support Unit (Colorado Springs): While not physically located in Canada, this support unit facilitates cooperation between US and Canadian forces
    2
    .
It's important to note that the presence of US military units in Canada is relatively limited and focused on specific collaborative efforts, particularly in aerospace defense. The cooperation between US and Canadian forces extends beyond permanent stationing, including:
  • Joint exercises like Maple Resolve, where US forces participate alongside Canadian and other allied forces
    4
    .
  • Collaborative efforts in Arctic surveillance and operations, with US air support sometimes requested for Canadian Arctic exercises
    5
    .
  • Shared use of Forward Operating Locations (FOLs) in the Canadian North for NORAD operations
    6
    .
These arrangements reflect the close military cooperation between the United States and Canada, especially in the context of continental defense and NORAD operations.

The British Army DID have a long time training base in Canada, at Wainright, Alberta, where they kept a large number of armored vehicles and artillery guns for exercises. CFB Wainright is so large that the artillery and the tanks could fire at maximum ranges, with out any danger to people. The RAF also flies in Labrador where there are large areas with no human population, which allows them to fly at minimum heights and at maximum speeds, which they cannot do any where in the UK. The British Army has recently decided to shut down their use of the ranges at Wainright, as a budget reduction measure. The Canadian Forces will continue to use the training areas at Wainright Alberta.

Canada and the United States do joint military training schemes with units going to Canada, and to the USA on a regular basis. Individual military members also attend professional educational courses in each other's countries. Recently a Canadian Forces armored recce unit drove from Alberta to Fort Hood in Texas for a 4 week live fire exercise. About 200 Canadian forces vehicles and 750 members drove through the USA on the Interstate highway system to get to Texas. JIM.
