Utah primary schools ban Bible for 'vulgarity and violence'

What do YOU think about this, @Alligatorob?
I guess I am a bit ambivalent. I think banning the Bible is ridiculous, as was banning classical art works that show nudity. All of that is just silly.

On the other hand I am not sure about the whole s*xal orientation thing. My first reaction is why would you want something like that in schools, but after reading @seadoug 's post I have had second thoughts. What I want is what is best for as many kids as possible, but I am not sure I know what that is. Schools should certainly be about reading, righting, and rithmatic first. That's what they are for, but I know other things can't be kept out.

I don't think Mormon doctrine is explicitly taught in public schools here. However many of them have Mormon seminary buildings adjacent or near to the schools. Mormon kids go to the seminary for an hour or so. Mormons believe in the Bible, with minor corrections. I'd be surprised if this was of Mormon doing.

Thanks for asking my opinion @Gaer what's yours?

Censorship of the Bible occurred in the past and is still going on today. In the 20th century, Christian resistance to the Soviet Union's policy of state atheism occurred through Bible-smuggling. The People's Republic of China, officially an atheist state, engages in Bible burning as a part of antireligious campaigns there. Then there's Utah ... not the first to remove the Bible from schools, as the article mentions.

This doesn't seem at all unusual to me. In all of my years as a school kid, and afterwards as a teacher, the only school where the bible was part of the curriculum and one of the texts issued to the students was a catholic one. Never happened in public schools.

However, when I was in 5th grade we were given a passage from the OT to copy as an exercise in handwriting. It is the same one that adorns the United Nations building - about hammering swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. It was meant to give us something more uplifting to copy than "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

It worked. I still vaguely remember that passage, though my handwriting remained pretty horrible.

Not to worry most people do not care. 33% of America says it has never read the Bible, but than 33% say they have never read a book after high school. One report says we read four books a year on average, while 17% say they read no books.

the book of Mormon has never replaced the Bible - just do a body count!
Actually been done, they are comparable, but the Quran is much lower.

God's Death Toll
Bible 2,821,364
Book of Mormon 2,251,586
Quran 4

The Bible has no place at all in a public school unless there is a high school course on religion. Banned? Should never have been there in the first place.
I don't know, it seems to me that our religious books, the Bible, Quran, Torah, Veda, etc. should be in many libraries. I think they are an important part of our history and civilization. Hard to deny believe any of them or not. But elementary schools maybe not, however having them in those libraries may be less a problem than the politics of banning.

Yep, libraries are full of rarely read books.

You really can't gripe about the Bible being banned when the same criteria bans Tom Sawyer
Yep, should we ban books that talk about slavery? Or the European colonization of the Americas? Or the Roman Empire... the list goes on. Hard to meaningfully teach those things without some reference to "vulgarity and violence".

And not teaching it would be to deny an important part of our history and what makes us what we are today.

My opinion is the same as @davey. This action seems to be from fear and ignorance.
Perhaps they are only wanting the Mormon Doctrine in their schools.
I've read this in it's entirety and found it to be wanting.
and I agree with YOUR opinion: "They are an important part of our history and civilization".
I find some of the scriptures of the Bible and especially the ancient Vedic writings hold so much wisdom.

Well, that seems fitting for the so-called good book to be banned too.

"In fact, nearly every book in the Old Testament depicts some sort of violence. God rained fire and brimstone upon Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 for their flagrant and wanton sins.

In Exodus, God blanketed Egypt with widespread plagues, including the killing of all firstborn children (Exodus 12:29).

Violence against women runs rampant throughout Judges, from the sacrifice of Jephthah’s daughter (Judges 11) to the s*xual abuse and dismemberment of the nameless concubine in Judges 19:23-30"

A Mark Twain quote on the Bible:

"It is full of interest, it has noble poetry in it and some clever fables and some blood drenched history, some good morals and a wealth of obscenity and upwards of a thousand lies"

Well, I think I learned about violence as a young kid at Sunday School.
Something about somebody killed with the jawbone of an a55 or something.
... and about how some ancient brother's got along ...

when God killed someone I would guess their souls lived on?? - has someone said that already?? - there is so much thrusting and parrying here?
