Wal-mart recalls Donkey Meat

Makes me sick to think about it, OH, as did watching Tony Bourdain eat fresh horse meat the other day....raw! And it wasn't in a 3rd world country, rural Spain or Italy, I think!:sick:

WallyWorld sells what they can depending on their location. It's too bad that they have to mix DNA of animals and provide a lesser grade product. The US does similar things with pink slime and other dangerous additives to the meats they sell us.

Horse meat was on the shelves in California in the early 70s, surprised me to see something like that in America...so donkeys aren't that far behind. Rumor had it that they wanted to gather the wild mustangs for horse meat here. I don't buy any meats or fish from Walmart, rarely get food items, just name brands that I know.
 
I'll try most things but couldn't eat an equine. To me that would be the same thing as eating a dog or cat. Although..... in places where they are starving - I'd say eat whatever will keep you alive (except humans).

I am super picky about our meat and fish and chicken too.

Pretty soon we will need a geiger counter to check our seafood here on the west coast.

Oh and I wouldn't knowingly eat horse, donkey, dog or cat..or monkey meat either.
 
Horse meat is/was considered a delicacy in Japan, a few other Asian places too. Genghis' hordes did fine on it too. I bought some for the dog (not this one) years ago and it smelled way to 'gamey' for me. Didn't do that again, I swear I could smell it in the fridge for months. Pure imagination so it was a pretty impressive pong.

It's all in the attitude of the culture, in some, eating an enemy was considered a sign of respect. Meat's meat, humans are best not touched because of the toxins and disease issues but protein wise were not much different to anything else once you get over the psychological hangups I guess.
I'll stay with birds beef and lamb though, thanks anyway.
 
We used to feed our pets horsemeat when I was a child. It was sold at the pet food store which was also the produce store, never at the butcher's shop.
Mum would chop it and cook it on the griddle for the dogs or serve it raw to the cats.

The smell of cooking horsemeat was tantalising if you were hungry. I did taste it. It was acceptable, again if you were hungry.
I'm sure there would be ways to cook it as a tasty meal if it were necessary.

Eating fox, or any other carnivore, is a much riskier proposition.

You're not kidding, I was talking to my husband about how we'll no longer be able to eat any seafood soon due to Fukushima. From what I hear, there was a recent event there that made things worse with the reactor. I bought some Potassium Iodide and Iodine with Potassium Iodide shortly after the disaster, but of course I don't have nearly enough for real survival. A few pages worth a looksee, we can't depend on the main stream media to tell us the truth about anything...

I love fish and shellfish, but gave up eating it several years ago. Hubby had a severe allergic reaction to shellfish and can no longer eat it anyway. After all the oil spills and the nasty fish farms and suspect handling in Chinese packing plants..I'm done. I'm a Pacific Northwest gal and was brought up on the best fish and seafood in the world and it killed me to give it up.

That's us, I am starting to tell the mister we need to cut down on seafood.

I'm also seriously thinking of not spending 2 weeks sitting on the coast this year either. Of course if we head east we have lovely Hanford, I'm sure our state will be glowing in the dark soon. But we don't want to head too far east, like to Yellowstone, it could blow anytime.

Maybe we better start working on an underground bunker. Ahhhh!!!!! zombie02.gif
 
I recall donkey meat too.

... it had been a harsh winter, the longest one during our trip West. Opening up the frontier wasn't supposed to be THIS hard - our wagons were stranded in drifts, our womenfolk sacrificed to the Yetis, and finally, our rations gone, we approached the donkeys ...
