Weight Loss Accountability/Support Group Thread

Today was a mixed day, woke up with a bad stomach so did not go to the gym, Wednesdays are not my biggest gym day anyway. I did start feeling better and got a little exercise, back to it tomorrow. I ate well and feel good tonight.

Weighed 193 lbs this morning.

Fine, except that today wasn't too good, felt bad in the morning.

Maybe you’re working out a bit too much. A few days ago I had major burn out but hey, you’ve lost 5 pounds and had strawberry lemonade sherbet. 😂That’s great 👍

How much is too much? I've been working out regularly for a bit over 3 years, and only slowly built up to the 3 hour days. Seems easy enough now, but I know I could not have done it a couple of years, maybe even a year back.

What happened? Really doesn't matter much. What counts is what you do tomorrow

Thanks for noticing!

I’m not sure how much is too much for you. I’m not sure how much is too much for me. 😂
I know I’m working up to walking 4 plus miles a day and I certainly don’t bounce back like I used to. Working out 3 hours a day is a LOT

Whoa, Rob! When you started posting, you were 198... and yesterday 193.... that's incredible and you're putting me to shame! :cautious: I've lost 4 now, but it's taken a whole month. Anyhow, time to celebrate your first 5 pounds! 👯‍♀️💃🥳🎉

I'll be checking in individually with people who have posted to this thread, but that will be a little later today. Right now it's very early and still working on my coffee. Oh, one question, @Alligatorob ... about that Ancient Nutrition. Is that something that's made into a hot sipping drink... or sprinkled onto your protein cereal... or....?

Okay... for a little check-in... because I hate the thought of missing posts, but I'm sure I do that all the time. If I ask something you've already answered elsewhere, pinch me... but not too hard! 🙀

@Alligatorob Do you have an end goal weight in mind... or is it "I'll know when I get there?"
@Happyflowerlady Is the IF going well for you? I really want to do that! And have you found any relief for that foot arthritis?
@Wayne How is the lifting going this week?
@packleader Have you had a good week on your health journey?
@PeppermintPatty Are you recuperating from that burnout? I think it's very important for people to recognize when that's happening as you've done and take some recovery time... otherwise we push and push and end up resenting it all and stopping.

LOL! Well Kate, one thing I’m really good at is jumping in with both feet. Unfortunately I’m not good at moderating myself. I did recover from my last burnout but have pushed myself so much in the last 3 or 4 days that I’m burnt out again.

I’m not walking today since I have a fair amount of housework to do but I AM moderating my food intake much better. I’ve got fresh salad made for todays meal. Most of my foods are soups & salads which luckily, I like.

I’ve kept the 2 pounds off so far and am happy that I’m still ‘on track’ with my weight loss goal. Thank you for asking and starting this thread.

How are you feeling?
Will you start walking soon?
You never actually told me what happened to your knee.

Hey Everyone! I've been talking with @Alligatorob and @OneEyedDiva about a forum support group for weight loss accountability. Still a work in progress, but hopefully a thread like this that we can keep going will work. If not, we're open to a multi-recipient PM group. And if you need one-on-one accountability or someone to talk with about struggles, etc. I'm fine with giving my email (privately in PM though.)

WHAT IT IS: A place for support and accountability. Whether you share actual stats or not is a personal choice. A safe place to share both successes and disappointments that will (hopefully!) be free of judgment. Not everyone chooses the same path for weight loss or fitness. It can also be used as a kind of daily food diary if that's what you wish to do.

WHAT IT IS NOT: Not a place for generalized weight loss advice because there are already a number of excellent threads that have that covered. Not a place for shaming others' choices. (Although Rob talked me out having a dinner of only ice cream yesterday and I'm extremely grateful!)

I'll start. My goal is to shed 18-20 pounds... maybe 3 or so more as a cushion when I hit goal. Mini goal would be 12 pounds less by Christmas and 18 less by Valentine's Day. I will be counting calories and watching sodium and fat. I am not going to count carbs at least in the beginning, although I'll stay mindful of them. I don't do things like My Fitness Pal because there's no way I'd have the discipline to enter everything I eat.

Hoping for success for everyone, one pound or inch at a time! (y)
Sounds great. I decided to lost 30 pounds over a period of time (months if not a year) and have currently lost 10. I watch fat and salt intake and eat lots of fruits and veggies and just being healthy. Drink lots of water, probably not enough. But, I like the sound of this thread.

It sounds like you are well. You are already 1/3 of the way there. We’d love to have you join us so you have some extra support. I’ve actually started drinking a lot more water. I was probably dehydrated for quite some time.

Great to hear about the 2 pounds and that you're still on track! (y) The knee was a freak accident in late January involving a kneecap (patella) fracture. It didn't need surgery fortunately... but recovery time turned out to be a lot longer than I was anticipating. I've bought a knee sleeve... so I *may* try to walk around the neighborhood a little, or on the treadmill without doc release to do that... not sure yet because I don't want a set-back. The pain was worse than labor pain for the first few days.

Welcome, @fancicoffee13 !! Since there's "coffee" in your name, here ya go! :coffee:
Huge congrats on the 10 pounds already gone 🎉💃🥳 ... you're off to a tremendous start. I don't watch fat so much, but definitely sodium... and I try to keep an eye on sugar/carbs. Water... I try to have enough, but I forget often.

You never actually told me what happened to your knee.
My knee was ran over by a truck years back pulling a helicopter, They gave me a new metal one and installed it, depending on when I weigh i go now from 203-207, 200 is my goal I am still losing due to clothes fit all but new stuff is way big on me, way too big! All that I did was to cut back on food intake and the all the therapy workouts, I go 3-4 days A week and walk a lot at home. 200 lbs will be right at a 50 lb loss I now comfortably wear a 32-34 jeans down from a 40-42. No special diet nor food just cut back on intake, Somehow I lost my appetite. I only eat 2 times a day usually skipping lunch. I am walking and drive short trips now, just slow walking though, yesterday I got on an exercise stationary bike and had to get off it as it was way to sore for me to continue. I plan on going to PT later today after lunch time. All this was just not planned just happened the weight loss I mean. We just late yesterday were invited to go eat steak again at a new place we never have been to so 2 times that week to go eat my favorite food. I will not cut back any that week at all.

On the water thing, I am active and when I step out to go play cards, I carry water with me because all of us bring a drink so we have something handy. I prefer water because, I really crave a Pepsi or coke, etc. So, to stay away from all that syrup and suger, all I carry is water. I am a healthy eater, in my 70's and am want to stay healthy as long as it is in my power to do so. I have also found fruits I love instead of chips, cookies, etc. I do cheat sometimes.

That sounds incredibly painful. A fractured kneecap. Ouch.

Injuries to our joints are probably the most painful injuries. Not meaning to lecture you but I think it’s best if you DO get your doctors approval beforehand. The last thing you want is to re-injure your knee needlessly which will only put you back even more.

I believe you when you state how painful it was. A few years back I injured my rotary cuff. The pain was horrendous and it took over a year to heal. Some injuries are serious stuff.

Goodness Wayne. What type of work do you or did you do? Pulling a helicopter 🚁? How? With what? I hope you had some type of workmen’s compensation.

Physiotherapy is crucial for some injuries and surprising how many people don’t do them. My father got a knee replacement and never did any physiotherapy so never got the full benefit of having the operation. His knee never healed properly due to it.

The weight loss wasn’t planned but I bet you are happy it happened. The knee injury wasn’t planned either but ‘stuff’ happens.

Enjoy your steak dinner Wayne.
You deserve it. 👍

Another great thread by you PP which o missed initially. Not long ago I stepped on the scale and as I feared my weight had crept over 200 ., by 5 pounds. But I’ve been seriously trying to rein it in -albeit not to the point of recording everything- for a few weeks now. I’d begun getting too tight in my 38 waist pants and some of my large shirts. In order to avoid a wardrobe do over I’ve taken some measures.

One is to mentally note a few of my take note of the mindset points that enabled me to shed 50 pounds over the course of my first two years of retirement. To wit:
* Notice actually feeling hunger before at least one meal each day.
* No mindless recreational eating - ask what value each thing I eat has.
* Keep in mind how much I have enjoyed feeling lite on my feet and taking walks. (Deciding to spend all day in a recliner is like deciding to take a short nap in the snow.)

On a more practical level my biggest meal of the day is usual steel cut oat meal with nuts and all the best fruit I can find. The next and sometimes last meal of the day will usually be around 1 to 2 pm. My wife needs a very restricted diet for medical reasons so I’m embracing the need to make healthy meals. If I’m on the run my favorite meal is a cashew butter and spun honey sandwich a small banana split lengthwise.

Indulgences at this point are restricted but not forbidden. So no more than one decadent indulgence/day. The candidates are either a lemon poppyseed muffin with coffee in or half a blueberry/lemon hand pie from TraderJoe’s in the morning - or a small bowl of ice cream at night. My other indulgence is to have a cookie with tea a couple times a day. Now I’m having either half a pkg of Belvita bars (2 cookies) or 2 Jojo’s also from Trader Joe’s. An apple is also okay anytime and I’m trying to maximize my water intake.

So I’ll report my current weight as soon as I can get into Lia’s room once she is awake. But I’ve been under 200 for at least a week now. Fingers crossed.

I am still doing the intermittent fasting, and my body has pretty much adjusted to that now; so I usually have my meal for the day after we get home from the fitness center. This way, I am doing my morning exercises in a fasted stated, and hopefully, burning fat for energy; plus if I only eat one meal, then I am not stimulating insulin as often as if I ate several meals each day.
I think that helps me to not feel hungry during the fasting times. I am losing weight, albeit very slowly. And think that if I am gaining muscle at the same time, that is affecting what I see on the scales each day.

We have at least a week of rainy days according to the weather channel, and if there is lightning within 10 miles, then they close the swimming pool at the fitness center, which means it will be “if and maybe” as far as swimming goes for a while. We do have the treadmill and exercise bike , so I can use that for exercise, as well as just walking back and forth through the house when the weather is bad.

An interesting thing that i am noticing since I started doing the autophagy/fasting, is that my hair is getting darker again. Before, it has been completely white for several years now, and now it is kind of a silvery color; so I think that I am growing in some darker hairs mixed in with the older white ones.

Glad to hear it's going well for you... especially with the fitness/swimming! Funny you should mention that about your hair... I have a friend who retired about 3 years ago. His beard was pure white but after a while it started getting some color back. He teased that it's because retirement was so much more relaxing than a high-stress job 🤭 ... *but* he also lost 40 lb. after retirement (kind of semi-fasting eating plan!) Well now that's interesting for sure!

Here are two pictures of the top of my head , one is from 2019, and the other from yesterday (pink band), and you can see the difference in my hair color.
Oh my goodness... absolutely a big difference! Isn't it fun discovering even more benefits from health choices we make than were anticipated?!
