Slovenly? Walrus? I yearn for a day when body shaming is no more acceptable than any other form of prejudice.

I'm not very "politically correct". Obesity is the Number One cause of health problems and costs, and Must be addressed. IMO, we need a lot more "body shaming" if millions of our people are not smart enough to assumed some responsibility for their own health and well being. It's a given that as people age, they tend to put on a few extra pounds, but everywhere I go, I see gobs of people carrying almost twice their normal weight....and age doesn't seem to be a primary factor. I've lost two friends in the past year who were quite overweight, and whose only exercise consisted of thumbing the TV remote, and going to the kitchen for more snacks. The few times I go to the doctor, I see a waiting room full of people whose belly is the largest part of their anatomy....and they wonder why they are spending days, and much of their income at the doctors office.

Oddly enough , when I go to the doctor, I see a staff that has weight problems as well. Like the dietitian that probably doesn't weigh much less than I.

I hear you. When I went in for my annual checkup a few months ago, the office had a new nurse, and she probably weighed twice as much as I do. Obesity is a growing problem...everywhere, and among all ages. Anyone who is concerned about health care issues and costs should take a long look in the mirror...and if they are not somewhere near a normal weight, they need to admit that they are part of the problem.

The top photo in the OP is a very old Japanese blown glass fishing float* with a glass plug or seal at the top (sometimes with a Japanese character embossed on it which increases it's value) and covered in barnacles after being out to sea a very long time. They are highly collectible and I have a collection of about 20 in various sizes. The photo color is enhanced a little to make it look brighter and shiny.

My largest one is about 18", a family treasure that we found on the beach when we lived in Japan. My parents cleaned all of the large barnacles off it and then regretted it as it lost some character. It's rare to find them with barnacles. The water inside surprises me. The glass seal at the top must have had a leak.

* The Japanese fishermen used these in their nets to float their catch so the nets wouldn't sink to the bottom.

They wash up on US shores, especially Alaska and Oregon. I bought most of mine on Ebay more than a decade ago.

My younger sister is one of those. She has a whole host of medical issues that are directly connected to her obesity and lands in the hospital about twice a year. I fear it will kill her.

Yup.
Not sure about lately, but they were somewhat plentiful when I was a kid.
