Britain is preparing for the incoming Storm Ciaran 'weather bomb' as dozens of schools are set to close tomorrow and flood barriers are put up outside homes.

The low pressure system has sparked a red warning in the Channel Islands as locals brace for winds of up to 100mph with ferries and flights axed. Pupils in Jersey were told to stay at home amid fears of destruction rivalling the 1987 Great Storm.

Southampton City Council has advised all schools in the area to close, while three Fareham schools and another in Stubbington will also be closing among others across the south. Headteachers have blamed the incoming storm for the closures.

Environment Agency workers put up flood barriers in areas such as Brighton, Exeter and West Bay in Dorset - while business owners in flood-hit parts of Northern Ireland were putting sandbags in front of properties in an attempt to minimise damage.

The Met Office warned flying debris and flooding will bring a 'danger to life' while the storm could also cause 'structural damage' to buildings, with roofs potentially blown off, power lines and trees brought down, travel disruption and power cuts.

A yellow rain warning has been issued for southern and western England and Wales, from 6pm today until 11.59pm tomorrow, and north east England and eastern Scotland from 6am tomorrow until 6am Friday.

Meanwhile a yellow wind warning is in place for southern England and south Wales from 9pm today until 11.59pm tomorrow as well as amber wind warnings in the south west and south east from 3am until 11am tomorrow and 6am to 5pm tomorrow respectively.

I was thinking I might go out after all to pick up some essentials.. before the storm gets worse..

It's dark and 6.15pm now.. however there's a big chance of aquaplaning in the dark... so maybe not a good idea..
Stay safe HD!

Sorry to disappoint you, but Chester is in Cheshire England, it's not in Wales.. altho' it's close to the Welsh border...

I live near London... but we have a couple of Welsh posters here on the forum...

Like everywhere parts of Wales are horrible, and some are beautiful...:)
It is so close to the border that Chester Football Clubs ground is partly in England and partly in Wales…which caused problems during Covid!

My Self let me sleep until 530. Thank you, Self.

It's nippier than was predicted. 28 instead of 32. No wind, though, so I drank my coffee on the patio.

I don't have a plan yet. If it's not windy, maybe I'll clear the frost-bitten flowers from the garden. Heck, maybe I'll do it even if it windy.

Storming on you yet, @hollydolly?

Thank you for that info, hollydolly. My father said he, as a child, had to "walk into England" to go to school but then again the family immigrated to American when he was very young....maybe 6 years old... I recall his dad was born in Wales. Now I wonder about that.

His surname in Wales is very common, 23.8% Welsh people have the same surname but I dont know when that info was collected. Popularity for the surname Brooks

Maybe my dad actually went over the border from England into Wales-to "grammar" school and maybe I dis- remembered what he had said
His brother had a full family tree done long ago by a very well known professional at Harvard.

We were more excited by our families documented connection to an American Indian tribe, that still holds the same surname in Massachusetts and I also researched archives myself, and I have marriage, birth and death records from the 1800s that supported the Family tree info.

Ancestry is a lot of fun to study but it can take a LOT of time.

Your info intrigued me! Thanks!

Hearlady- these test do not take long and I hope your results are OK.
My first one showed minimal osteoporosis but after taking D-3 bone nutrients, (per my doctor's advice) my scan showed less of the osteoporosis , in any other scans I got.

I had the nuclear full body bone scan, as well ,a few years ago and that went very well. But it took so long that I fell asleep.

No @hollydolly yet? Reckon her power is out from the storm?
yes the power was out gigi... so far, we just have heavy rain and and a strong breeze.... but I can hear police or ambulance sirens going off in the distance so I suspect there's been accidents..

other parts of the country just south of me.. have had it rough overnight...

it's fine for now... I just worry that everytime it goes off it's damaging my Mac.... . I don't open the freezers when the powers is off..
So far as I know - we've got a MacBook Pro, an iMac, and two iPads in this house - no damage is done to our Macs when the power goes out... which is more frequent than in many locations.

The official wisdom here for freezers is to have some old blankets available to drape over your freezer until power is restored. When it's been out for a day here, everything is still okay in our freezers, even if we've opened the lid a time or two during the outage.

yes your freezers will be ok living in the frozen north of Canada...:ROFLMAO:

Deboned a deer carcass. this morning. Came across a very recent roadkill in very good shape and registered it last night. Deboned it all this morning and will take it in to mix with beef and pork for hamburger. It only provided 25 pounds of meat as it was quite small, but it was easy to handle. Going bow hunting tonight to maybe get some more.

I like to get these road kills even though many hunters look down on it. It is free lean quality meat and I have never had a bad experience with the meat as I know what to take, when to take it, and how to discard any questionable meat.
