What are you listening to in 2024 ?

While I am an unabashed, unashamed low brass player, I always appreciate great music in the Duke Ellington tradition (two kinds of music -- one is good, and the other kind). One of my first forays into jazz was via this man, Hubert Laws -- a flute player.

He takes this simple song -- Amazing Grace -- and acknowledges it as one of the great songs of our age. He starts out on either bass flute or alto flute (I can't tell the difference), and finishes on C flute, accompanied by his associates. It's a wonderful presentation and if you can hear the difference between him and other flute players, you can appreciate his artistry.

Has Manhattan Transfer been mentioned yet?

Janis Siegel, one of the four in MT, cut this solo album in 1986 -- one of my favorites.

Lew Soloff, of Blood, Sweat and Tears (the early years) on solo trumpet (with Harmon mute).
