What are your favorite old West movies?

You guys like "High Noon"? I thought that was one of the most boring movies ever made. Am I alone in this?
Couldn't agree more, but it was still more exciting than 'The English Patient'. Who ever imagined Broderick Crawford could be menacing.

Kilmer killed it...made that movie
I think that was his greatest role
Kilmer was great in it, wasn't he? (He was also very good--tho not as good as in Tombstone--in an odd but very good movie called Salton Sea; kinda violent but boy the acting, not only Kilmer but Vincent D'Onofrio, wow!) Dennis Quaid was very good playing Doc Holliday in Wyatt Earp but I have to give Kilmer just a bit higher grade, lol.)

I had a huge crush on Sam Elliott, so any movie with him in it seemed great to me. I remember The Quick and The Dead in particular.

But my absolute all time favorite cowboy was Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke...

I love this thread!
It brought back so many memories of GREAT Movies.
I made my own list before going through the posts and scratched them off as I saw that you folks had already listed them.
LOL, I ended up with an empty list and nothing to contribute.
But just reading the titles of these great movies made my day. Many Thanks!

We seen, on tv, some western movies of Audi Murphy. Destry and Walk The Proud Land. Funny to see Anne Bancroft (The Graduate fame) playing an Indian lady in Walk The Proud Land. Ended up buying on e-Bay, Audi's movies: Walk The Proud Land, To Hell And Back and The Red Badge Of Courage.

I like the old Clayton Moore/Jay Silverheels, Lone Ranger movies and have a few. Bought The Legend Of The Lone Ranger (1981) on e-Bay that stars Michael Horse (Tonto) and Klinton Spilsbury (Lone Ranger). Had seen it on tv once, many years ago, and liked it then. Nice to see actors who played Wild Bill Hickok, General Armstrong Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody. Although, in this movie, Silver wasn't all decked out in silver tack, like the Silver was that Clayton Moore rode.

Yesterday, on one-of-two western channels we have, watched: The Searchers, Train Robbers and The Way West.

The Searchers had John Wayne's daughter and one son in it as well as a very young Stephany Powers. Powers was playing John's daughter. The Train Robbers had a fairly young Ann-Margaret and, one of John Wayne's favorite actors, Ben Johnson. Funny, but in John Wayne's movie, The Searchers, two actors were in it from John Wayne's Green Beret movie. The Way West had a very young Sally Fields in it. Never knew she had been in a western movie.

There was another great one that I don't think ever hit the theaters, but I saw it as a 2-part mini-series on TV in 1999...…"Purgatory".

Here's the synopsis: "An outlaw band flees a posse and rides into Refuge, a small town where no one carries a gun, drinks, or swears. The town is actually Purgatory, and the peaceful inhabitants are all famous dead outlaws and criminals such as Doc Holiday and Wild Bill Hickok who must redeem themselves before gaining admittance to Heaven...or screw up and go to Hell. The residents must either defend themselves against the outlaws and risk eternal damnation... or die a second time."

Good actors and a great story.

'High Noon,' Gary Cooper's haggard expression was due to Ulcers and Back Problems.
Note his left hand, caresses his tummy
. His personal life was a mess, he was quite the rake, skirt chaser...
Grace was a young actress, with limited experience (and skill?)-It is alleged that had an affair: Cooper was an old fart, Kelly was a kid.

Gary Cooper could not make a bad movie per his fan base.
Remember this was in the 50's .
The plot was to teach young people how to tell time, there was an awful lot of clock watching tick-tock it's almost twelve...

My cousin took me to see the Wild Bunch, it was my first R rated movie

I feel like some kind of heretic. I'm not a fan of Westerns. The storylines are all similar-a powerless guy stands up for his rights against formidable odds. While I couldn't get into Westerns my dad loved them. In fact, I can't think of the word "Western" without thinking of how much he like to watch them. Yeah, anything with John Wayne was great for him.
