If it's fresh bread I will use the heel as part of a sandwich, if it's a few days old I'll toast it but as we have three Golden Retrievers and they get a slice of toast with Vegemite each morning there is nothing that ever goes to waste.
Dry and powder them add seasoning for breading veal, chicken, or pork chops. Dry cube & season them for croutons. Great for making bread pudding. I guess that could be considered being frugal I like to think of it as not wasting food.
