What do you first notice when visiting someone else's house?

First let me say Im an antique and kitsch collector. When we go to each other's houses its normal to check out each other's stuff.
Its not considered rude to inspect things and pick them up and check them out. And ask questions.
I have found that people who are not like me will give you the side eye if you do this at their house.
If I go there I need to sneak peeks.

So to answer your question the first thing I notice is do you have anything interesting.
Then I notice if youre a fussbudget. Or not. Im comfortable either way. Your house. Your rules.
Ive been to houses where they had to clear off a chair so I could sit.
I dont care how clean your house is or if there is cat hair on the furniture.
I came to see you not your house.

My eyesight also makes it hard to see unless there's good lighting plus I don't have a good sense of smell. Just want to have good conversation and enjoy the visit!

I seem to remember that baking cinnamon buns works well too.

If there are no children in the home, I like to see a neat and clean home. The TV room would be an exception. I have been into many homes. Some have been like a rats nest. Others were like the Queen lived there. My mom was a very fastidious cleaner. She would be up at the crack of dawn and never sat down until after lunch.

yes I wasn't thinking of animals just fixtures... however obviously if there was a dog, and it would let me I would be making a fuss of it..

The smell. I've been to some lovely houses, beautifully decorated, but the smell of cat and dog urine would knock you down at the door. Apparently, they don't notice it, being used to it.

Probably the smell of the place. Everyone's home smells different and not necessarily bad. I always notice what my place smells like after going out for awhile.
