What do you keep your thermostat set at in the cooler months and Winter?

I have a programable thermostat so temp varies. Day time is 62F., evening (pre shower time) it kicks up to 65, than at 7:30 P.M. it drops to 56 for overnight.
I'd have an even cooler house in winter and warmer over summer than stated in my post above, but my husband's comfort zone is in a narrower range so we've compromised.

I'd like to set it on 84, which is the temp I set it on in the summer, but in winter, the bill would be too big, so I set it on 70 or 72 and that means I have to wear a jacket sometimes. I'm never comfortable in winter.

You would definitely perish at my house. I have hot water heat with different zones. In the winter I keep the living room side at 65.
The upstairs and the bedroom at 55. I would like to set my AC at 65 in the summer.

Are you on blood thinners. The husband became colder after he started taking them. You might want to look into silk long underwear.
Its not bulky like the thermal kind. Its very light weight and doesnt show under your clothing. The turtlenecks look like clothing.

I live in an old building with live steam heat that is provided by the landlord.

The old boiler keeps things feeling fairly tropical on all but the coldest windy winter days.

I control the heat by opening and closing windows.
Before I was married I lived in an apartment in an older building with radiators. In the winter my windows were open 24/7.
It would be below zero and I would be in shorts and a tank top. This house has hot water heat but thankfully I have control of the thermostat. :D

I used to crack open the window at night until I heard a fight between a cat and what sounded like a squirrel 🐿️ it scared the heck out of me! So I mostly keep it shut.
We occasionally hear raccoons fighting and sometimes fall out of the tree and hit the deck. o_O

It's the Eastern Screech Owl or Crickets that are a real comfort to listen to.

The occasional screams of Red Tail Fox when being chased by Coyotes can be alarming, almost sounds like a child in distress.

I used to live in a corner unit near the parking lot of my building. At night I would often hear a young girl scream, then smell the odor. I guess they weren't taught ya don't empty trash at night during skunk season........and ya NEVER scream when you see one😄😄

It is at 55° ATM and will stay that way until the weather gets really cold. Then I will set it at 62.

If we get below freezing at night, I will plug the space heater in to keep the floorboards warm so the waterlines under the house don’t freeze up. We don’t have basements where I live, just crawlspaces.

:D You're kidding about silk underwear. Thanks, but no chance, lol. I do have sweat pants though. No, I don't take any blood thinners. I do have Raynaud's syndrome, but it doesn't require treatment. I'm used it that most people want the temperature low, so I have to live with their wishes when I go to their homes, restaurants, etc. - but in my domain, my preferred temperature is 80 or above in summer, and then in winter I layer on more clothes as it is kept cooler to conserve on the natural gas bill.

When it's 100 degrees outside, if I ran my air conditioner on 72 or lower, not only would I feel cold, but the compressor would run almost constantly, generating a bill of around $300 or more per month. Not only that, but condensation from the unit that normally drains outside the house uneventfully would back up into the hot water heater pan and activate the water alarm + a mess to clean up. That has happened in past years, requiring a plumber to come out and unstop it.

Nope. Not kidding. You need to get past the silk part. :D Who is going to know anyways. :D
Back when I used to know several older people who wore them under their clothing.
I remember they wore them under their dress clothes and they werent bulky like thermal long underwear.
Silk is actually very warm.

I really can sympathize. Being hot is no fun either. I was hoping that when I got older I would cool down like the rest of the old ladies.
Hasnt happened yet. Its 58 here so I went crazy and wore a corduroy shirt to the grocery. I had to turn the AC on in the car to make it home.

I appreciate your good thoughts; you are a caring person. I've always felt colder than most people. I remember my fingers turning completely white in winter even at age 35, then taking quite awhile to get their color back. It expect it was meant to be for me to live in Texas. :D

@MACKTEXAS that is true about the silk underwear.🤠🤠

@Veronica my husband was like yours after he had his heart attack and had to go on blood dinners. We suddenly became polar opposites in temperature. He was always freezing unless it was 100° out and his poor skin was paper thin; it just broke my heart to see that. If the dog‘s toenail barely touched his skin, he would bleed like someone sliced him with a knife.

Heating season, 68 - 70 in the daytime. 63 at night and window is cracked open for sleep.

Cooling season, AC is set at 73 during the heat of the day and turned off at night. Small fans are used where needed.

Sometimes I hear the coyotes barking at night. Sometimes I hear them killing something. It’s really an awful sound. Fortunately city sounds are rare too. Maybe sirens.

We mostly keep the thermostat set at 71 year round. But there are exceptions, like when Im cooking a bunch, that the house heats up, other times when it drops below freezing, we’ll adjust it accordingly.

Over Thanksgiving when I’m cooking all day, sometimes for two days straight, that I’ll turn on the AC because it’s gotten so hot in the house!

Yep. It's expensive in Texas during all seasons. We have upstairs and downstairs HVAC units. They are fairly new and energy-efficient. We also had our windows replaced in 2020. The A/C is set on 78 during summer, but I turn the downstairs down to 73 at night because I need a cool room and our bill was over $450 during August and September. The heat is set at 68 during cooler months. So far it's barely come on but during January/February I dread to see what the bill will be. Energy costs have really gone up!

BTW, we also had the situation with the water draining outside the house. It was landing on the wall and causing rust. We had to have it unstopped. So far, so good.
