What have you bought recently?

I still didn't spend any $$, but I didn't leave The Hovel today, either. Meh. I moved it to savings for the April 15 IRS hit. Oh. This year it's April 17 because the 15th is on a Saturday. I get to keep my $$ for two extra days.
We're going to get hit hard by taxes this year, too. Not sure how much but it'll be a fair chunk and next year will be worse. (DH just filed for SS benefits against his own earnings record and will start getting that soon - when he turns 70.)

Since we won't close the lion's share of our business until December 2023, between both of our SS plus business profits, we'll be paying taxes on our earned income plus 85% of our SS.

Although I'm not one who generally objects to paying my fair share of taxes, it's still hard to write those checks to the IRS and state. Maybe it'd help if I mentally reframe SS as regular income that I don't have to work to obtain...

I'm seeing sad emojis in response to my earlier post about owing taxes. I want to explain that there's no need to feel sad or sorry. If DH & I were only getting a couple of thousand dollars a month in SS and/or weren't still working part time, our tax bill would be close to zero.

Our business quite unexpectedly more than doubled last year and this year appears to be on pace with last year's numbers. With DH turning 70 and our income getting that big SS bump, plus the business profits being good, the IRS understandably wants its share.

Even after sending in those hefty tax checks this April and next, most of the increased income winds up in our pockets, not the government's.

That compact portable battery charger, for cars, or devices, sounds great and well worth the purchase.
@Blessed and @MarkD
They really are great, I did not know they existed until I was doing some research on things to keep in the car for emergencies. I also have started keeping an extra car key in my wallet. Yes, I can't lie, I have found a way lock the keys in the car when they are not in the ignition. I never leave the purse in the car. I do not have my fob anymore so I lock it manually. I have so many talents LOL!

I locked my keys in the car twice.. and not in the ignition same as you . Got out, and got stuff out of the Boot.. having put my keys which were in my hand down on the floor of the boot first to lift the shopping or whatever it was out .. and slammed the boot door shut before realising I'd left my keys in there..

Yes, that was one of the most recent times was locking them in the trunk when I got groceries. I wear my keys on a little elastic bracelet. I had apparently caught it on a plastic grocery bag and it slipped right off in the trunk. Had to call out a locksmith for that one. I could have walked home, about a 1/2 mile to get the spares but I did not have a key to the house hidden outside. Also got a spare house key, hidden outside, just in case. I think we should start a new thread, things you have done to get out of a jam all by yourself. LOL

I managed to get into my car because fortunately I'd left a window open a little enough to push it down to open the drivers door .. .. however the second time I had to call a locksmith out because my door keys are on the same bunch.. that cost me a pretty penny I can tell you, so after that I got a combination safe lock attached to the wall of my house with a spare set of keys in there..

I went cheap, house key in a tiny horseradish jar, buried somewhere in the yard. Yes, right now I know where but if my memory gets worse, I will have to come with another plan.

hahaha..I'm not kidding..I did that . Buried a spare set of keys all wrapped up against the weather, put into a small tin.. and buried them in the garden behind one of the Shrubs..had to be well hidden in case of burglars. they know the old trick of hiding keys under a rock et al... wasn't until a few years later when I locked myself out and went to get the hidden keys, that I realised I'd forgotten exactly where they were. They weren't where I thought I;d buried them, and of course because I couldn't get into the house to get the barn or shed keys, I couldn't get a shovel to dig deeper.. but to this day I've never found that tin of spare keys !

Let's just call them time capsules for future generations. I have buried mine in a special place in the yard. I hope I don't forget. I could see how you could forget, you have a big garden! I do also have a key to the gate and the shed out back. The kid knows where they are so he can come and go at will to do the yard work. He has a key to the house so I have not told him where the spare is.

I didn’t buy it for myself, but for my girlfriend. Well I say girl, she’s actually a woman. But anyway, yesterday I bought her a battery-powered makeup brush that also promised to give a flawless foundation in seconds. It also said on the box that it has interchanable heads with 360-degree of rotation; multiple functions to meet all your needs; natural looking & double-ended. At first I was a little unsure with what I’d actually bought!

I went for the discounted version. When she used it for the first time the foundation looked great, but when she then applied the make-up with it, or top-coat as I prefer to describe it, the batteries died and her face looked like a Picasso painting.

At that point I started to wonder what would happen if I bought some new batteries & fitted them the wrong way around. I put this to her, and I’m now wearing the brush as I type.

My car will not allow me to leave my key fob inside. Well, I can leave it but the doors won’t lock and the car beeps at me. So never been locked out so far. I did lock myself out of the house. Went out the front door which has an inside lever to turn to unlock. If you don’t turn it and close the door it locks so go out the door and close it means you are locked out. Had to call a locksmith since I had been lazy and had not bothered to place an emergency key outside. My neighbor has a key but she was not home at the time. Emergency key is in place now. I guess it could be found but I’m thinking my burglar alarm will do its job if that happens.

@hollydolly Did you ever get the household insurance straightened out and into just your name? I’ve been thinking about similar possible issues with all the utilities, since many were only permitted to be in one name. There‘re other possible ownership items that could be a headache.

funny you should ask Jules, because a paper copy of the renewal came through the other day, which was great because it not only let me know who we were insured by, but whose name is on the policy, and it's in both names !
