What if....

.....it had been Three Wise Women instead of Three Wise Men?

Well, instead of getting lost, they would have stopped and asked for directions, which meant they would have arrived on time for the Holy Birth. They would have helped with the delivery.

They would have passed on the gold, frankincense and myrrh and brought practical presents instead, like disposable diapers, rash ointment, and some cute little onesies.

They would have thrown a hissy-fit and probably gotten the innkeeper to upgrade the Holy Couple to the Immaculate Conception Suite. If not, they would have at least swept the stable, put out a few decorations and had some had some fresh straw delivered.

And finally, they would have cooked everyone a delicious, nutritious casserole and taken care of the baby while Mother Mary had a nice nap.

Of course, here's what you would have heard as they clopped away on their camels:

"Virgin birth, my sweet patootie! I know her from school, and besides, that baby doesn't look one bit like Joseph! Whatcha wanna bet I don't get my casserole dish back?"

Wise Men and Three Kings

Jube, you have "tickled" a memory buried deep in my old reserves, regarding the Wise Men. In grade school we sang "We three Kings of Orient are, ......", something about "from far'. Forget all the words.

But I've always wondered about this, being neither particularly religious nor irreligious. Were the "Wise Men" and the "Three Kings" one and the same? imp

Not in that part of the world.

Since most women are not allowed education they would not have been wise, and they would not have been permitted to travel without a responsible male's permission. Since all their possessions belong to their husbands they certainly would not have been allowed to give away gold and such!

Saw part of that on a Christmas card yesterday with the ladies kneeling in the manger with those types of practical gifts. I almost bought it for a friend but paying around four dollars for it would not be amusing...

Three Wise Men, The Kings, The Magi....one and the same. Who knows, there may have only been two of them or maybe seven of them? The only number that's actually mentioned is the "three" gifts, so either one of them was very generous or the rest of them were cheapskates. Like some of my relatives.....the cheapskate part.

Some things have not changed. Mary and Joseph had to take off precipitously and by an alternate route to avoid the wrath of Herod. Now days, they kick you out of the hospital within 24 hours of birth to avoid the wrath of your HMO.

Supposedly gold, frankincense and myrrh were the standard gifts given to Kings and other royalty back in those days.

Gold as a precious metal, frankincense as incense and myrrh as anointing oil. There's also one scientist from Wales that claims that frankincense has an ingredient that treats arthritis, a common affliction in those days.

Tablet, capsule, powder or tea - there are several different forms. As with all herbs, though, you have to be smart about picking the good stuff, the real stuff - too many dealers these days call it authentic but stuff the capsules with kitty litter.

Falcon, you can get frankincense at a Catholic religious goods store. You'll need a safe heat source, they also sell burners. It is a resin. I used to put a few pieces on my old electric stove coil. I lov e the fragrance!
