Diwundrin has back-to-back wins for her correct answer of this WII being an iron ("heavy metal").

Specifically this is known as a Goffering iron or Italian iron and was used for ironing pleats in curtains or bonnets by inserting a hot metal poker into the tube, transferring the heat to the outer surface. The rest of the iron - the curving support arm and the base - are simply for when you placed the iron down on a table.
