What is something you rarely see now?

Wash houses... /Turkish baths

When I was little we had places where those who didn't have washing machines took their washing.. the were called Baths but they were like industrial scale laundrettes, and they shared the building with the Turkish baths ...women would push their big bundles of washing in a pram to the Baths..

Not us because we had a washing machine.. but we'd see these women all the time

Snow! Here it is December 31st, in central New York State, and we have had just one day of snow so far. And that was just a dusting on the car and ground. I have memories of brutal New York winters from my childhood that stretched sometimes from October to the following March. I also have memories of no snow at all living in Florida in the early 60's, for five years. I know that global warming is real and a serious issue, but I must confess, I love having winter with very little snow, and no longer having days of sub zero weather!

I don't remember what they were called - but I would get into an elevator at a store and they would have a man or woman pushing the buttons for us....lift operators, I think.
I did that in high school when I worked for a local department store. There were no "buttons" but rather a lever that moved the car. The required "skills" for the job were (1) being able to stop the car level with the outside floor, (2) knowing what items were on which floor, and (3) courtesy, courtesy, courtesy! :D

I spent some time in a building in NYC that had an elevator with an attendant. He had to close the door manually I remember. I think there was a lever he pulled.
