What makes you say “What was I thinking?” when you look back on your life?

Marrying my ex, but it was a learning experience for later in life so?

Honestly can't think of any others.

Jamaica can be a dangerous place, particularly downtown Kingston to a young 19 year old!

I know!

I've driven the whole island, twice. Once we went up and over the Blue Mountains, out of Kingston, once we took the long way around them. We never had any problems, but we had a scary incident: This old coffee grower, way up in the mountains, offered to let us camp up a bit from his house. He took us up to the site that had an incredible view, but there was a freshly filled-in grave just a hundred feet away. I'm not positive he wasn't watching our faces to see if we were getting spooked. Later, even worse, his four sons came up to our site with machetes in hand. I figured we were either dead, or not, so I stayed perfectly calm and friendly. They had this enormous boom box, and we had a very tiny one. I talked that up with them, and they cracked up, with high fives all around. They could have easily done us in and taken our rental car, but they didn't. In the morning, their dad brought us fresh coffee and pastries. Breakfast never tasted better because we were alive. We took pictures, shook hands with dad and his sons, and were off. I still have those pictures. I actually think there's a small chance that had we panicked, and tried to run, I might not be here typing this, today. As it was, it turned out to be a great experience. FWIW, Jamaica is not like it used to be: Instead of pushing to sell you killer weed, the local hustlers now push to sell you drugs that will kill you. Very sad for such a cool country that has so much to offer in terms of its people, music, cuisine and scenery.

Once, when arriving alone at a New York airport, I was struggling with my bags. A very nice lady offered to watch the two bags I already had while I went to get the third one. I said OK, went and got
my bag, realized how stupid I had been on the way back, and was hugely relieved to find her (and the bags) actually waiting for me! It could have turned out very differently.

Don't know what made me so naive and trusting, except that I was exhausted and desperate for help.
