What to do with canned ham

@Mizmo, this ham is shrink wrapped, look in the case w/ bacon, keilbasa, etc. They come in various sizes, from 1.5 lbs to 3 lbs. It's pre sliced.

I love it. I buy the smaller ones, section it into about 3 portions and put 2 in the freezer. They are fully cooked.
I like these but unlike the small, canned version, you have to keep this one cold, and they have a limited life in the fridge. The canned ham has a limited life also, but it is in years not months...
 
My purpose is to throw cold water over the whole idea.

Boar's Head meats is closing it's factory due to a listeria outbreak and filthy conditions all around. Reading about it and how some of it's products are made has turned me off all pork products forever. Pepper's people have been right all along.

I wouldn’t overreact, listeria in fruits, vegetables, and cheese has caused sickness and death.

I’m amazed that our food supply is as safe as it is considering the enormous amounts of food being processed.

It’s a delicate balancing act between safety and cost, unfortunately we tend to put cost ahead of safety.
 
I don’t eat canned ham for two reasons. The ham itself is far too salty and raises my blood pressure as well as making me exceptionally thirty and two, the containers they come in are very dangerous once opened. I’ve cut myself on them before.

We will buy these whenever the go on sale. Slice into ham steaks, cubes for soups , omelets and such, vac-u-seal and freeze. Of course the bone and some will make a fresh batch of split pea soup....
Dang I'm getting hungry.
 
I remember tinned hams from when I was in my very early teens because I was able to cook them. I would take a good sized slab of the meat and put it on a baking sheet. You can mix brown sugar and a little water into a glaze and spoon this over the slab. Pierce the mea with whole cloves and bake until done. It doesn't take long. It was very tasty. And it was popular for awhile in my household when Gran was in the hospital and mom was too busy with work to cook so that fell to me. :)

I did buy a tinned ham , cost about $7 and first I will say that I did get the good smell of ham when tin was opened which I never ever got from the sliced deli stuff.
It came out of tin easily as it has quite a lot of liquid which makes it a little on the soft side
I blotted it off with paper towels and that helped.
So with a few slices of that, some potato salad. some coleslaw I did have a very tasty meal without lifting a pot which is what I have to aim for with every meal.
Cost of three items was just under $19 and I have enough for at least another two meals.

Yes I will buy again and thanks for all replies with suggestions.

The brand I bought was 'Swift" 454gm..$6.49 in Walmart and NoFrills. Maple Leaf brand a dollar cheaper .
I thought I would give ML a try next time I buy.

It was a little salty but when I blotted it with paper towel it was less so and with the salads very tasty.
I never salt anything these days so perhaps I was more aware of it. Most of my food intake is packaged , frozen etc., never use the salt shaker.

Like I said a little softer than a big cooked ham but taste was good.
I have small Geo Foreman grill, years old, and thought I might try a slice or two grilled next time....maybe today....:unsure:
Again, no cooking, so good for me with my hand problems.
 
I don't ( can't) cook any more and very fed up with frozen package foods and soups.

I remember a long time ago 'tinned ham' was considered a treat for dinner.

Do people still buy and how would you serve ?

I do have small toaster oven which I handle with care for short periods.
We buy ham steaks from Sam's Club in the US. They are packaged separately and freeze well. Easy and quick to defrost one, and if you don't want to cook at all, they make good sandwiches, good with crackers and cheese.

If you have a toaster oven, maybe you can make a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, that's always tasty. I don't buy canned ham, but did buy a cheap ''ham' years ago from the supermarket to find that only a tiny core of the 'ham' was real ham, the rest was some pressed and formed garbage, mostly went into the trash.
