My hubby makes a soup with canned ham with carrots, celery, onions, barley, chick peas, etc. It is most delicious!
I bet that's delicious given that you can use your own flavorings! We actually can our own SPAM. Grind up pork shoulder and some ham, different spices for flavor, pack in a jar and pressure can. reduced salt and no preservatives
We like it. We also stuff it into sausage casings and smoke it. One mix I added pineapple and jalapenos.... its the bomb.I bet that's delicious given that you can use your own flavorings!
I agree, I think the larger canned hams were also much better than the little one pound Danish canned hams. You know, I was thinking, the last can I had was more like spam. They used to be good. Again, maybe the brand.
Nothing against spam but ham should be ham.
That's called Kielbasa in my family! We also stuff it into sausage casings and smoke it
I like these but unlike the small, canned version, you have to keep this one cold, and they have a limited life in the fridge. The canned ham has a limited life also, but it is in years not months...![]()
@Mizmo, this ham is shrink wrapped, look in the case w/ bacon, keilbasa, etc. They come in various sizes, from 1.5 lbs to 3 lbs. It's pre sliced.
I love it. I buy the smaller ones, section it into about 3 portions and put 2 in the freezer. They are fully cooked.
That's ok. I don't need a ham that lasts that long.I like these but unlike the small, canned version, you have to keep this one cold, and they have a limited life in the fridge. The canned ham has a limited life also, but it is in years not months...
So, why do you feel the need to comment? That's ok. I don't need a ham that lasts that long.
Why do you?So, why do you feel the need to comment?
I had a purpose to find out why you commented! What was your purpose...?Why do you?
I wouldn’t overreact, listeria in fruits, vegetables, and cheese has caused sickness and death. My purpose is to throw cold water over the whole idea.
Boar's Head meats is closing it's factory due to a listeria outbreak and filthy conditions all around. Reading about it and how some of it's products are made has turned me off all pork products forever. Pepper's people have been right all along.

We will buy these whenever the go on sale. Slice into ham steaks, cubes for soups , omelets and such, vac-u-seal and freeze. Of course the bone and some will make a fresh batch of split pea soup....I like these but unlike the small, canned version, you have to keep this one cold, and they have a limited life in the fridge. @Mizmo ,Well ...... reporting as promised .
I did buy a tinned ham , cost about $7 and first I will say that I did get the good smell of ham when tin was opened which I never ever got from the sliced deli stuff.
It came out of tin easily as it has quite a lot of liquid which makes it a little on the soft side
I blotted it off with paper towels and that helped.
So with a few slices of that, some potato salad. some coleslaw I did have a very tasty meal without lifting a pot which is what I have to aim for with every meal.
Cost of three items was just under $19 and I have enough for at least another two meals.
Yes I will buy again and thanks for all replies with suggestions.

We buy ham steaks from Sam's Club in the US. They are packaged separately and freeze well. Easy and quick to defrost one, and if you don't want to cook at all, they make good sandwiches, good with crackers and cheese.I don't ( can't) cook any more and very fed up with frozen package foods and soups.
I remember a long time ago 'tinned ham' was considered a treat for dinner.
Do people still buy and how would you serve ?
I do have small toaster oven which I handle with care for short periods.
Look for Maple Leaf foods, or Schneiders from Kitchener , both make nice ham in various selections. JIMB.That looks great but I am in Canada and I don't see it available anywhere..
