What to do with canned ham

This topic about canned hams reminds me back to my youth working in a grocery store. In those days it was very common to see those 5 pound canned hams. I remember they sold a lot of them. My parents used to buy them but I don't remember how they prepared them. Now a days you can't find canned ham in some stores and if they have them they are usually those small 1 pound size cans.

We occasionally buy a bone in ham to bake and freeze the leftover to use in my split pea soup recipe. But when I don't have any in the freezer I have been known to buy one of those 1 pound canned hams to substitute.

HAM/SPUD SOUP

1/8 cup butter
4 green onions chopped
1/2 cup diced celery
4 cups diced potatoes (about 5 average-sized potatoes)
2 cups chicken broth
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 cups milk
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots
1 clove minced garlic (or 1/8 tsp garlic powder)
1 cup cubed ham (about 3/4 lb.)
1-1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp dried parsley (or 2 tsp fresh chopped parsley)
1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

Put butter, regular onion, carrots, celery, and garlic into large saucepan and saute until 'till onion is soft and clear. Add green onions, potato, ham, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and parsley and bring to boil. Cover and simmer 'till vegetables are cooked, stirring occasionally. Stir in milk and heat through, without boiling (about 2-1/2 to 3 minutes). Garnish with grated cheese. Makes 4-5 cups.
This sounds really good. I love split pea soup with ham but also love spuds with ham.
Split pea soup is my absolute favourite soup.
If we have some ham I shall try this.

I did my frozen fries in the microwave for 40 seconds and they were just like McDonald's... Yay! I will never do them in oven again.
'Crispy ' is out for me now with the old teeth.
For those who still like a little crispy, I toss some frozen fries in a fry pan with a little oil (or spray the pan with Pam or the like), fry on medium and they come out pretty good.

Hey Ripley,
I tried this recipe today and it was great. The only thing I changed was that I used evaporated milk diluted 50% with chicken broth. While serving I wished I’d added another couple of liquid. I also grated the carrot instead of slicing it and added croutons along with the grated cheese. My husband really liked it. There’s only 1 serving left. We had 2 servings each.

@Mizmo - I agree with the others, to soak canned ham to get the salt out, otherwise you might consider getting a slice of ham. Thats what I got when I made the above soup. The brand name is ā€˜Cook’s.’ Wishing you the best.

@PeppermintPatty
Guess you missed my follow up post #62 re Maple Leaf Brand. Not too salty. Wiped it with a wet paper towel.
No cooking involved .
I try not to get involved with stove top cooking now.
Too risky with my hand problems.
Sorry Mizmo. I didn’t miss it. I actually liked your post. Perhaps I forgot.

That’s uplifting news. It’s definitely something worth smiling about.

I really am joking about OAS...my increase is about $13.00 as it affects the GIS.
I see some other news about a $1200 one time payment which has been approved for all Canadians
Now that is something to smile about
Have to do a bit more Googling tomorrow to get details

I must check out the Cook's ham next time I do an online shop
