What was a "big new thing" that fizzled out?

I was in a parking lot when a guy clicked his car, which was next to me . At first, I thought it was that new car option, which would beep when you touched the car. Ya know, an anti-theft device. Then it dawned me, they don't offer that anymore. They were the big new thing years ago. I lived in NYC, when that was the "big new thing". You couldn't go down a street, without hearing at least one car beeping away. That option fizzled out.
What other "big new things" fizzled.

BTW I bought a beta VCR, a 4 track music box, a Yugo car, etc. etc.

Oxygen bars, where you would drop in and have a healthy huff of oxygen. They appeared briefly several years ago, a big deal was made of them, and then they just disappeared.

8-tracks?

Disco?

The 3D TV is the first thing that popped in my mind.

You beat me to it. 3D TV. Wonder how many people spent perfectly good money on one? Another one is the big curved screen. It looked nice but way too spendy. I don't see many of them on display anymore, not that that says much because I don't usually go anywhere that sells (or sold) them.

I don't know if this fizzled out, but I hope so. Some cars emit a little horn beep when you lock them from the remote. I guess it's supposed to let you know that your car is definitely locked.

The problem is, late at night those damn beeps can wake the whole neighborhood every time somebody locks their car!

I don't hear them as often as I used to, and my new car doesn't have that feature. So maybe it deservedly fizzled out.

Segway ....or at least reinvented many many times.

That's what I thought of first. The inventor (or was it the promoter?) said that 'communities would be built around them', which was because they needed their own lanes or sidewalks to be viable. But that never happened and they never became popular.

For sure. I only see them in some shopping malls, being ridden up and down the aisles by security guards. Otherwise, a total bust.

I wonder why that is? I'd love to have one now, although I imagine they wouldn't be too practical in a Pennsylvania winter. :blue:

There are segway tours of downtown Milwaukee. I'd LUV to take the tour, for both the tour and learning / experiencing riding (driving?) a seqway. But, I don't care to do things away from home alone.

Cigar bars. Bars where men, (and ladies I suppose if they felt so inclined) could go, sit and smoke cigars to their hearts content. This was supposed to be a big thing but I never even saw a cigar bar.

I remember when there were waterbed stores on every corner in the 70’s, I bought one and had a sore back the whole time I owned it, I haven’t seen a waterbed store since then. And everyone had rubic’s cubes, one Christmas I received three of them!
