What was the best decade in America?

America has gone though a lot of changes in its 249 year history — some good, some bad. Next year will mark our sestercentennial anniversary.

So what do you think was our best decade and why?
A very open ended question. Much depends on your ancestry - indigenous, slaves, refugees or free settlers.

As an outsider I consider the Camelot period of the Kennedy administration outstanding. The Cold War was in full swing and US landed men on the Moon. As a teenager and later a young woman, I was excited by that period. I was shattered when Kennedy was assassinated. I wept for his loss, and not just for US but also for the rest of the world.

Ya know, no matter what decade is listed, someone's going to list the nasty things that happened and say "that was a horrible decade!" Yep, been here, done this. But I'll answer anyhow from my own perspective... and that would be the 70s because so much good happened for me then... but teenagers may not notice "the bad."

I always thought that my parent’s generation was fortunate to live, work, and raise families in the ‘sweet spot’ that followed WWII.

In my lifetime the 80s were the most fun and the 90s were the best financially.

Life is what we make it, every decade has had unique challenges and rewards.

I have to agree with Deb that the 50's were a great time for living and growing up, at least as a child. I remember back in the late 50's through the early 60's, when the election was for President, it was a fun time. People wore political buttons, ribbons, hats and all types of paraphernalia. Being nasty on TV wasn't acceptable by the FCC regulations and I always have thought that made a huge difference with how we treat the two nominees that are running for the Office, both in previous and current years. The media today controls to many people's thinking.

My dad was kind of friends with Eisenhower and had visited at his farm in Gettysburg. I never saw him and I'm not sure about my Mom. My dad served under him in WWII.

No doubt about it. During the 80's came the dot com revolution and made many people millionaires. My family benefitted greatly from it.

Yes I concur, the 80s and 90s. The Cold War ended and times were good. No major wars except a brief and successful skirmish called the Gulf War. And then came 9-11!
The 50s weren't bad either, at least if you were white.

My son was born 1980 and I must say because of this, and his dad, the eighties were the best for me (despite two severe losses). I never experienced such feelings of love before or since.

Afterwards, I flew too close to the sun. That's what soaring too high will do.

"How did YOU get so happy & successful?" my BFF asked. "Revenge." I answered. Little did I know......

In America, in the eighties, if you worked hard & were smart about it, rewards were still possible. Not so much now.........

Definitely the 50's
The birth of rock n' roll - the music was for dancing
Cars with style and hot rods that are even the preferred classics today
Malt shops, car hops, and drive-ins were in vogue
Drive-in movies
Girls with ponytails and cashmere sweaters and guys with blue jeans and T-shirts
