What Would You Do If A tenant Did this To Your Home?

Looks like it was done by the mentally ill, druggies or possibly on purpose as revenge against the landlord. Someone would have had to dump it in after they had moved out maybe, or else how could they wade through it?

Either way, it's unbelievable!

I'm with you Cookie on the dumped in there after the fact, more likely promotion for the property management company or yes, some very mentally ill, druggies. But looks staged to me.

Track him down, catch him and (somehow) make him pay for any damage and replacements.

Also hire a few (willing) toughies to hang around and be sure he completes the job.

Ugh. Ihave no idea how I can find a picture I have on my computer because I have no idea what date it was but back when I was doing property inspections,I had a house that looked pretty much like that. The loveliest part? The living room was filled with urine filled bottles-whiskey bottles, vodka bottles, all kinds of bottles. The guy who had owned the house was apparently injured in an accident at work and was housebound-maybe even chairbound-not sure. But it was really disgusting. I will try to find the pics of this place...

We had to rent out our house for two years while we lived in Africa. Fortunately, we talked some friends who didn't own a home into renting it from us.

Looks like something out of an episode of the "Hoarders" series. Back in the late 50's/early 60's, my parents owned a couple of small rental homes. They had some good renters, but also had a couple of bad experiences. One moved out and took everything but the toilet with him (and that was only because the toilet was completely filled with poop)....he took the sinks, the lighting fixtures from the ceilings, the furnace, a couple of doors, and even the outlet covers and switch plates in all the rooms (why?). Eventually, they got fed up and sold the houses to a young man who was a friend of the family. They warned him to be very, very careful about who he rented to. Of course, he didn't, and had the resultant bad experiences. He ended up signing the houses back over to my parents within a year (they were holding the mortgage). The experience left me with a strong conviction to never, never be a landlord.

In the article, the landlord apparently didn't check on the property for some years. So.....there's more to this story than meets the eye. He should have checked and could have evicted the tenant for the mess or made them clean up. Surely he would have had to come by to do some maintenance work in that time. Also, how did he get these kinds of tenants in the first place? Didn't he take any references? and it's possible the place was sublet. But he still has to go and look at his property or have someone look in for him. So he partially to blame himself.

Some landlords don't want to bother keeping the place up, but if the rent somehow gets delayed, then the show up good and quick.

I don't know the last time I saw my landlady and as far as letting agents are concerned they can't always be trusted to inspect as they are paid to do.

Any maintenance that need seeing to in my house, I phone the company that my landlady deals with, they come out and do the job and then invoice the landlady............win win situation all round.

We also have a tv series called the hoarders where houses are shown similar to this, so I am not sure why this house has been highlighted in the press.

I'm not in the UK, but if this happened here, first thing I'd do is due them for damage to property. Might not get any money out of it, but could make their lives miserable. Get a judgment and hound them for years.

Many years ago, part of my job was to manage my employer's rental properties. What that taught me was to NEVER be a landlord -- WAAY too much hassle and heartache, and just not worth it.

Butterfly, that is true it is indeed a hassle, not for most people, certainly not for me. At the moment, my complex management people are trying to recruit me to work on a project, I'm thinking I should have said no, just knowing my past dealings with the general public; even though I won't be doing any tenant property related things, just the thought of them thinking I may have an inside voice with management is a frightening thought.

It looks like a big mess and very hoarderish. Usually the one month deposit fee is used for clean-up. I'd be hesitant to rent out my house if I ever moved, seems easier just to sell it. I grew up in a rental apartment, and my mother kept everything very clean and painted the walls and ceilings when needed on her own. Nowadays, renters have no respect for the property...I personally could not live in those conditions. Those folks usually have some deep-seated issues. The owner is at fault also, for not having someone keep an eye on the property.

When I owned my cleaning company we used to do the occasional apartment "flip" - cleaning up after a tenant moved out. I've seen some nasty things, but I agree that this looks staged.

We had a different apartment that management was going to rent us. It was upstairs, but it was going to take quite a bit longer to clean it up than they originally thought. It was pretty bad, we were told. Anyway, we got a call a week after filling out the Apartment App and management told us that they were going to put us in the 1-level "bungalow" apartment that we really liked, but the cost was a little too high for us. For a year, they charge us the "bungalow" cost, not the regular 2-bedroom cost. We've been in this apartment now since Jan '09 and really like it. It could use repainting and the carpet changed, but that couldn't be done until we moved out. It's still a nice apartment and only 1-level.

I know what I'd LIKE to do...
My take is this is not staged. I have seen more than several episodes of Hoarders and the trash is often piled higher than that, dead animal bodies to boot! There really are people like that, they are quite mentally ill!

The after cleanup photo of the kitchen shows a nice, bright, modern space. Such a shame to have made such a mess!

Have a look at this mess that a tenant left for a landlord

Jeez...I would hunt him down and rub his face in it..
holy crap! how did they even get in and out of the house?

there's only been one time i deliberately left a mess and that was at a slumlords apt building. they weren't gonna give me my deposit back so i just left it as is. i had to clean it when i moved in so i figured they could clean it when i moved out.
