What's the fanciest place you've ever been?
The fanciest place for me was the 1969 Sportsman's Dinner. It was held a very upscale hotel in NYC. I was in the Navy and through the U.S.O., I got to go. It was first time I had oxtail soup. Mohammed Ali was there. When I went to the john, I couldn't believe there were all these attendants waiting on me. I came from a small town in Massachusetts. Back there, having T.P. in the john was a luxury.

I've been to any number of high end "fancy" restaurants . . . expensive but seldom very interesting. Homes of wealthy people . . . very large, very expensive, typically very sterile. Actually, when I think of "fancy" I think of my grandmother's house. Large but not extraordinarily so, lovely grounds, servants, her personalized decor. She was very into French provincial . . . lots of gold and white . . . and gold. Lots of artwork on the walls. Porcelains. Crystal. Us kids were always cautioned to not touch anything.

Not really to my taste, but she DID set the standard for "fancy" for me. ;)

Probably Biltmore House but as a tourist, not a guest. I can't remember the fanciest place I've been as a guest. Whatsisname, the Father of My Children, was, shall we say "well placed" so we went to a lot of elegant receptions, dinners, soirees, dog-and-pony shows, the kinds of affairs requiring gowns and elbow-length gloves.

I’ve been to many fancy places in my life. In grade 8, I went on a luxury trip to Vancouver city, Vancouver with my school. The complimentary soap and shampoo was top quality in every hotel we stayed in. I’ve been to weddings that were luxurious in every way. I’ve been to ā€˜coming out ā€˜ parties that were way over the top luxurious. I’ve also been to receptions that had washroom attendants. I’ve been to concerts where people wore tuxedos and ball gowns.

My childhood friend had the most museum-like house I have ever seen. Each room was decorated in a specific period and it overlooked a lake. Nothing was ever out of place.

My husband worked for a major charity in Rhode Island and he ran a Gala at different Newport mansions. I remember Marble House, the Breakers, Belcourt Castle and Rosecliff. Lots of marble staircases and terraces with ocean views. I got to do pen an ink drawings of them for the invitations.

Fanciest place I've ever been?....almost too many to mention. When I was stationed in Europe for almost 4 years, I did a lot of traveling I went to Paris many times, spent a week in London, and several days in Italy, plus all over Germany and nearly every other European nation...never made it to Norway or Sweden. In my final military year...1967...I visited many Buddhist temples in Thailand. The world is filled with beautiful "man made" sites.

On our Ruby Wedding anniversary we did the day trip on The Orient-Express.

Our journey began at London's Victoria station where we boarded the British Pullman in the morning, before crossing the English Channel to Calais, where we transferred to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for the journey to Paris, arriving in time for lunch

We had the afternoon sight-seeing in Paris before making the return journey home. The locomotive that hauled our train in the UK was the restored steam engine "Mallard." There were quite a few what we call "train spotters," aboard. We didn't have the luxury of Google back in those days but the train spotters informed us about Mallard.

On 3rd of July 1938, the A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record. That record still stands.
