What's weighing on your mind today?

I've been away for a tiny while, and returned to see lots of threads that are obviously political. But when it comes to some topics, if the majority consider it righteous, then the ban on political commentary here is allowed to pass. I found this observation interesting within itself.

I also pondered the forum, and its members. We all seem to get on really well, despite a few head bumps along the way. But I also realized that respect is easily lost by a disagreeable post or belief - like it's best to know just enough, but not too much.

I sure hope the forum calms itself down. IMO YMMV.

this is the difference in the way we get raised... because GT Britain was destroyed during the WW2... and by the time I was born 10 years later, houses had just stated being built but people were still very much in the mind set of war... and the huge damage all around... so it was common for conversations to be about war, and war related things past and present.

You have to remember that there had been 2 HUGE world wars in the space of just 20 years, and had killed so many Brits, and hundreds of thousands of home, factories, stores, hospitals, everything.... and so the lilellihood of it happening again soon.. was high in everyone minds, but they were sure that next time it would be the ''A or the H bomb''.....

..all of my childhood that's all I heard.. that there was going to be another war.. we got taught how to survive it..or not at school... we even had a an Ar Raid shelter in our gardenns at one house where we lived..... and it was very common for parents to talk about it to their children.. and scare us into thinking we wouldn't live long...

My mothers' favourite saying was , ''when they drop the bomb I hope they drop it direcltly on my head' so I dn't feel anything''.. this was said when I was knee high...

So..my whole point of this long post is to say... Nuclear war doesn't scare me as it would others because I was raised thinking it could happen any day...
I was raised with it too Hols. In the U.S. we used to play "spy" as kids because we were so scared of war with Russia. But MADD, mutual assured destruction, calmed my nerves as I grew old enough to understand it. No reasonable person would risk that so war became conventional again instead of nuclear. It was as though nuclear existed for one moment in time when it would have the most lasting impact. Which it did do.
I agree with your mom. If I were to be involved in a nuclear attack I wish it would land right on my head so I would die instantly. And I hope as peacefully as possible in the circumstances.

I am backing off any political topics. It has become evident to me that one train of thought rules, so as a new member, I guess the VIP long time members have earned the right to rule with their righteous indignation. I started sensing anger and hate and who are you to question me with my credentials.

I agree that respect is lost by what is posted and I will do my part to stay on fun topics, which is why I joined. I thought NO Politics meant No politics, but I have learned different. Some of the forum VIPs have their definition and it seems to rule, so certainly not my place to complain.

Thanks for your common sense post. I hope other newbies see it before they leave, never to come back. I see you are a VIP but not scrappy as your title indicates. How did you get the Scrappy title?

I don't know who you're talking about when you say long time members have earned the right to rule with their righteous indignation...

I don't see any real long term members doing that... most of us who have been here a very long time, tend to stay away from Political discussions,,particularly partisan politics.. we know the rules

You seem to be mistaking all of those with VIP under their name for long time members

So VIP doesn't mean they are long time members? What earns them that status?

Not a VIP at all. I just added that myself.

Why scrappy? Well, a kind hearted lady from foreign shores, on this forum, thought I was scrappy and labeled me as such. Besides, some people are offended by the word "git", so scrappy fit perfectly. ;)

Thanks. That is a fun explanation. So far I haven't been labeled, at least not to my knowledge. It is neat that this forum lets members pick a custom title.

On Friday I have a procedure where they go into my heart and implant something called a Watchman. Its a bit scary.
My wife had heart surgery last August. Her surgeon told us to expect good days and bad days. His words were most prophetic, but even being per-warned doesn't prevent the bad days from being scary. We have been married 57 years and we were dance partners for four years before we married. The lady is still my beautiful bride. I want to celebrate our diamond wedding (60 years wed,) anniversary in style.

It's weighing on my mind that I have to clear up the spare room, but I don't have the storage to put the stuff... so I'm going to have to clear out more drawers to make space .... but it's too hot without AC to even think about doing it today

You don't have A/C?
NO A/C... I've spoken about it at length here in the last few days and over the years on this forum...

most households in the UK, and even here in the South in the hottest part of the UK barely anyone has A/C in the house because it's prohibitively expensive to have installed... and we really only get very hot weather for about 2 months of the year.

Unlike Spain , where everyone has A/C including me , and it's very cheap to have installed..

Already on the list.

The thing is, we have a 'usual' list, with just the basics.

Then, there's times when my wife is planning on making something different, and the list gets expansive.

This is one of those lists.
My husband and I share an interactive list on our androids. Sometimes I add things while he is out shopping, which bugs him because he'll think he's finished and then something new pops up. Honestly, I'm just putting things on the list before I forget. 🤷‍♀️

That must be hard. Is it hard to sleep at night without ac? As compared to Spain?
