When Will People Stop Doing Stupid Things Like This?

Like the high school student that made this sign to get a Prom date in Florida. Now him and his family are apologizing and the student says the sign was meant to be a joke. He done it off-campus, but his school wants to discipline him. A Law professor says he's only exercising his Freedom of Speech rights.

lol - doing stupid, inappropriate stuff is what teenagers are supposed to do. It will never, ever, stop. Thank goodness

I don’t really know how such things are handled in America. Here, in Canada, any such sentiments once expressed publicly, fall under our hate speech laws. At home, you can spout whatever filth you wish. That said, young and foolish often go together, I suspect he has already experienced a backlash. Perhaps the school has a mandate to punish such bahaviour?

What some folks might think is wrong or confusing is the way our Constitution is written.

Each stat has its own written laws and no requirement for them all to be the same. Certain situations are given the same rights for the entire country. It is better this way as our ways of living is different in various parts of the states. That means different rules will have better outcomes. We are the volunteer binding of individual states into a merged conglomeration known as the United States of America.

If Congress is convinced they will start a Constitutional amendment activity and if enough folks agree there will be a amendment vote and new words will be devised to fit the new ideas. If not enough votes, then no changes will be made.

Right now there is little to say about words spoken. But if the courts are asked in they may decide to modify this right to freedom of speech for some special reason. Certain actions or words too close to grade schools, churches, play grounds for little one or even bigger ones, no physical abuse of others.

There are a number of racial problems currently in the U.S., from removing monuments/statues to just joking around about something. But, when the joke is pointed towards a certain race, which in historically Mexicans, Hispanics and Blacks, problems will happen.

The kid meant it as a joke, but him and his family should definitely have known better. Even the girl he was asking was disgusted with the sign.

For some, it is considered a Hate Crime. For others, it was a joke that shouldn't have been done.

If I can toss this question in here:

If you were the only Jewish person in the area, and encountered a recent drawing of a skull with a swastika on it, would you consider it a hate threat, and if so what would you do?
The drawing also has the first letter of my real first name above it.

Important points: there are no teens/kids around here.

How frightening, JaniceM. I definitely consider it a hate threat, and I would inform the police.

I agree Janice, I'd report it to the authorities, maybe they can find the person who did this. Honestly, I wouldn't want to live in an area with such prejudice. Good luck and be safe.

Unless this young man has shown a pattern of hatefulness or insensitivity, this should be a painful isolated episode for him. It's certainly not an unforgivable offense, given the context of his age and today's pressure to be witty when asking for a prom date.

Who among us hasn't attempted humor and bombed? Sometimes we only realize in hindsight that others might interpret our words differently than our intention.

Poor kid - it's one thing to do or say something really stupid, it's yet another to have that mistake go viral.

It's a tempest in a teapot. The young man certainly did something stupid, but then boys at that age are usually thinking with the wrong head most of the time. I can only hope it taught him (and others) a valuable lesson that will lead him better in the future. Hate crime? I don't think so.

Interesting. I think what is perceived to be a hate crime differs from country to country. With Canada’s stringent hate speech laws, this individual would be in considerable trouble.

I don't know ClassicR. There is an undertone of racism here...plain and simple. The cotton picking reference says it all. You have to wonder who he hangs out with. I'm glad the young lady he was asking expressed her disgust and I sure hope she said NO!
