Which would you prefer- Taxi ,Uber, Lyft?

If you had to, which would you prefer, a Taxi, Uber, or Lyft???
There's another news article of some whacko Lyft driver endangering riders. And it does seem strange that we didn't have these problems with regular Taxi companies. And by Taxi, I mean the drivers drive full/part time as their job, their profession, and main income. The other companies have drivers, who are supposedly just adding to their income, and don't drive as a profession. I've never used Uber, etc, just taxis.

I had a bad exp with Uber, first time I used it...I joined a site
call GOGOGRANDPARENTS, and they will set you up with rides and pickups etc....welp, my first ride to the bank, told driver to
wait as i knew my business would only tak 10 mins...came out
and got in car, he said he didn't have order to take me home!!!!
After calling gog, he still would not take me home, I had to get out of his car, call another Uber who finally took me home!!! (by
the way, home was only 1 mile away!!) Never again......

There used to be plenty of "Yellow Cabs" in most areas. I haven't seen any of those in quite some time. They were a trustworthy company that provided reliable transportation. Now, it seems that Uber and Lyft have taken over, and the number of negative stories about these "groups" make me a bit leery about ever using them.

I stil do not understand how these "services" pushed the taxicab to the curb ? It is IMO just another of those things that are considered "cool" by the younger gereration . Instead of using a phone to call a cab ..... we now must use an "app" to call a car .... an "unmarked" car. That in itself sounds dangerous too me. But hey ... if ya wanna be like the cool kids ? I guess that's what we must do ?

I'll drive myself just as long as I can then ??????

Taxi, absolutely. They're the only ones who know how to drive properly. Here in NYC getting a hack license has certain requirements Uber & Lyft don't have:
Requirements
  • Be at least 19 years of age
  • Be a legal resident of the United States:
    • U.S Passport, or
    • Birth certificate, or
    • Green Card
    • Work permit
  • Driver's license or equivalent (A, B, C or E)
  • Social Security Card
Documents
  • Complete 6 Hours DMV certified defensive driving class no more than 6 months before filing the application
  • Notarized Child Support Certification form from the NYC Office of Child Support Enforcement, form can be obtained within TLC location.
  • Signed medical history form by a doctor proofing eligibility to drive a cab

There is no Uber, no Lyft, no cab service here or in nearby towns.
If an elderly person were unable to drive, well, they are out of luck!
Take me, for instance. If for some reason, I couldn't drive, I don't
know anyone in this area that I could call who could or would drive
me anywhere.
This seems a blotch on a supposedly utopian community, to not
take older adults into consideration.

while i do not use these services i know many who do with no problems ...... think it is fairly even ... when i looked up costs for a ride it was not any savings really either.

yes there have been incidents on all three options....... with drivers of taxi / lyft or uber.
while some just do part time or subsidize their income MANY now do it full time.
do not let one incident color your perception especially when many details were left out of that story........
drivers of all three options have been attacked / assaulted and even killed ............. and in turn there have been more then a few who have assaulted passengers as well....

I'll go with a taxi. I've never used the car services. I've needed a taxi on a few occasions, with a dead battery etc, to get to work.

@Gaer I didn't know you lived in such a small community.

I have encountered in my job, several times, people who moved to a rural area when they retired. It's what they wanted, that peace and quiet. But then they got too old to be so far out. It was sad.

I think at least one reason that happens is that, like most things unfortunately, it's run by men. And since I've found that every. Single. Man I've known IRL and a lot I've interacted with online, no matter how old they are, think that as long as they live, they are ninja-behind-the-wheel-road-warriors ("I've still got the eyesight and reaction-time of a 20 year old!"); and since they think they're going to be able to drive forever, I guess they think everybody else is too.

Agreed! I feel sorry for someone elderly who can't drive and has no one to call for help.

Wow! I could be talking about MYSELF in a few years!

There's a taxi stand incorporated into the subway station up the street. The drivers are all very experienced. They know that if they take the shortest route, they will get a bigger tip. I don't recall every taking Uber or Lyft.

I always prefer Uber or Lyft to a taxi, cheaper, cleaner, and friendlier. Also usually more convenient.

Can't tell a difference between Lyft and Uber, most of the drivers work for both.
Cleaner vehicles, some taxis aren’t. The driver does have a sign that says “Uber” or ”Lyft” in the front window. Once a vehicle has been dispatched for you, you can see a photo of it, the license, and the driver. Also, you get an good estimate of what the fee will be. Getting in the wrong vehicle shouldn’t happen if you’re vigilant.

In Vegas the taxi drivers were notorious for long-hauling you. That didn’t happen with Uber or Lyft.

I have had good luck with Uber. They kept me informed of where the driver was and when I could expect their arrival. I get a little map on my phone showing my area and it shows the driver’s location and my location. Price difference, I don’t know, but I like helping out a person that is trying to earn their way.

Frankly @Gaer I don't think anyone much considers 'older' adults / the elderly .... execption being we are considered a nusience ....

The older I get, the more I feel people only think about separating me from my money!

I need to get busy and begin experimenting with the various car services and buses in preparation for the next phase of my life.

In this area, Uber seems to be a common choice, followed by taxis, and Lyft is a distant third.

Same problem here, I can get a Lyft or Uber at the airport to take me home, but no chance for a pickup from my home. It's to rural.

There are a few senior shuttle things in the area, I have not really investigated... suppose I should the day may come when I need it.
