Who agrees? The only good thing about Jazz...it scores highly in Scrabble

Good for you! You might give Django Reinhardt a try. His small band swing music with he on guitar, along with his partner Stephane Grapelli on violin, is very catchy, heart felt, and foot tapping. They played mostly in the '40s and early '50s, and the two of them influenced a ton of players who followed.

I'm sure there are plenty of cuts by him on YouTube.
Django Reinhardt played gypsy jazz. He and his band — Hot Club de France — may have actually created that genre, but they were one of the first bands to feature a guitar as the lead instrument.

I love most kinds of music including jazz. Actually, it was in the USA that I first heard a live jazz band, prior to that, I hadn't really listened to jazz music. Jazz music reminds me of those days; the clubs, the music and the martinis :)

I've never heard of Gypsy Jazz (I know... I know, it's hard to believe there is something I don't know something about [hey that would be a good life quote]) but Gypsy Jazz sounds very interesting. Don't miss me while I go research it and don't worry I'll be back to tuck you in.
Here's some upbeat gypsy jazz, from one of the originals in Paris, Stephane Grappelli. I find it energetic, joyful, and sweet. Grappelli is a violin virtuoso.

I love Jazz. Of course, it's a big bucket of stuff, from New Orleans Jazz to Avant Garde - so generalizing by saying "Jazz" isn't really meaningful.
Yep!

And everyone needs to experience walking through New Orleans and hearing NO jazz wafting out of every bar and restaurant you pass.... Heaven (especially if they have a great clarinet!).

I couldn't disagree more! There are many forms of Jazz, much of it I love and listen to often. Manyy of my compositions are Jazz fusions, mainly Smooth Jazz and Latin Jazz. I first got into listening to Jazz when I was about 14 and have enjoyed several different artists and styles over the years. I don't like Avant Garde or Bee Bop Jazz, however. I have a couple of Jazz favorites playlists.

@HermitHogan I love some Miles Davis, but not all of his stuff. Would you believe I think I have the Kind of Blue CD, but never played it !? One of my favorites by him is Teo, from the Someday My Prince Will Come LP. Do you have that one?

Miles was not afraid to cross the lines into other genres, so had recorded tracks I really like that are best described as fusions. Here are two of them that are in my collection. Check out the first comment on the first video...funny!

Thanks! You might want to start a thread called More Good Jazz where you can pop one anytime you think of it to enlighten those of us who started listening to jazz later.

Nice idea but there are several Jazz threads already Mark. I add to them from time to time. I don't think we need another thread. Anyone interested in exploring the many flavors of Jazz music will find variety based on members' tastes in these threads.

And here's one I missed; apparently everyone else did too. Just came across it today in my search and intend to respond.

What makes a Great Jazz track by an artist consists of many things.

BTW B....I do enjoy getting high scores using the J (and other 8 point letters) while playing Words With Friends. The Scrabble app is a PITA, so I stopped using it. My highest scoring J word was Jerk @127 points.

Thanks for the links.

My first experience of jazz was at a new girlfriend’s house in like 1980. In addition to being a court reporter she also played a mean piano. So after our first evening together while she looked to put together something to eat she played this famous record. Listening to it for me is like coming to a waterfall after a hike through beautiful forest. This story about how it came to be recorded on a broken piano kind of illustrates what musical gods jazz musicians are.

Bretrick and Holly, there are many, many kinds of jazz. I think I may be able to post a couple jazz tracks that you might like... if you approached them with an open mind. Maybe yes, maybe no. Would you give them a listen, if I posted them on the "what are you listening to" thread?
Like my Dad used to say, people who like jazz.......just get it.

I like mellow jazz, bossa nova or French jazz to relax. (the last maybe fits in the Gypsy jazz genre? Never knew there was such a thing)

here's one I like:

I really struggle with jazz, mainly because most of what I hear takes me a long time to figure out where the tune is.

Songs with some jazz influences I'm ok with though.
