Who understands the offside rule?

My mind goes into a mini-coma as soon as my husband starts explaining it. I really cannot grasp any of it.

So am I unusually thick?
Football is dominating our evenings at the moment. I sit and read while my husband has his beers and enjoys it.

Offside rule? Football? You must be talking about what we call soccer, right? Because football as I know it doesn't have that but I think soccer does. And yes, I understand football, but never had an interest in soccer.
 
The game is called football..it's called that because we kick the ball with our feet.... why the US calls it football when they run around with the ball in their hands... that's Rugby....

If you think that the soccer version of football's offside rule is incomprehensible, try understanding Rugby Football's version.

"A player is in an offside position if that player is further forward (nearer to the opponents' goal-line) than the team-mate who is carrying the ball or the team-mate who last played the ball." Clear as mud

Offsides is a penalty on the defense, when a defensive player is in the neutral zone when the ball is snapped.

Illegal motion is the penalty on the offense...and then there's false start, a penalty when an offensive player makes a motion that looks like the start of the play after the line gets set.

FYI, Murrmurr is speaking specifically about American football, which also has an offsides penalty.

Hockey also has an off side rule. An attacking player is off side, if they enter the other team's defensive zone, ahead of the puck. One of the 2 on ice linesmen will "Blow the play dead with their whistle, and a face off will take place ". In a game where professional players are moving at up to 35 kilometers per hour , the on ice officials must also be elite level athletes, to keep up with the action.

Un like the players, the 2 referees and 2 linesmen are on the ice for all of the 60 minutes of a game, although they get to rest during the 15 minute breaks between the first and second periods. Hockey is the fastest form of sport that does not include mechanical devices like bicycles, or engines. It is also one of the most physical sports with extended periods of continual action. Professional hockey players look like long distance endurance runners, lean and tall. In last years Stanley Cup final series one of the players played 4 games with a fractured breast bone. Playing hurt is a part of the game. JIMB.

This the 'exception."

"Although an offside foul is usually committed by the defense, if an offensive player lines up in the neutral zone, an offside foul will be called against the offense. An offside foul will also be called if the ball snapper advances past the neutral zone before snapping the ball."
(NFL Rulebook--Rule 3---Section 20) NFL Rulebook

In NFHS or high school rules, it's referred to as "Encroachment."

American football is finally entering the 21st century and is going to be testing similar technology to measure first downs during the preseason games. I kind of like the "chain gang" measuring the first downs though.

I liked it when there was such a horrible call by a ref that coaches go ballistic. I have seen several players and coaches get ejected from baseball, I was just wondering if that has ever happened in an American football game.?
 
My guess is that now that gambling in the US is legal in many states that most leagues will be using technology more to make sure that all the calls are correct.

In last nights game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers, a off side play, that resulted in a Panthers goal, was ruled to be "NO GOAL " after video review by the on ice officials, and the NHL's video review room in Toronto. At the time the score was 3 to 1 for Edmonton. The final score was 5 to 1 for the Oilers, forcing the 7th game to be played this Monday night in Sunrise Florida.

The Stanley Cup is by far the hardest Championship trophy to win, in any professional sport. Why ? In order to get to the final best of 7 series, a team must win 4 out of 7 games, in three series leading up to the finals. Then they have to win four MORE times to win the cup. A total of 16 wins through the 4 levels of post season play offs. And of course, in order to get to the post season a NHL club has to have won more than half of their 84 games in the regular season. Monday night, here in Canada, the streets will be deserted because at least 50 percent of our population will be watching the game.

While the Florida Panthers have a loyal fan base in their State, the Edmonton Oilers have an entire country cheering for them, from coast to coast to coast. here is a link to the Oilers fans singing OH Canada before game 6 last night. I have officiated in the NFL as a fill-in on a PT basis for 17 seasons. I could never commit to a full time contract because of my job with the government, which is very extensive. I have never known or heard of a head coach in the NFL to be ejected.

Fans need to understand that at the MLB level, umpires have a tremendous amount of power thanks to their union. Managers in MLB can't get away with much of anything towards an umpire.

I was surprised to hear that you officiated in the NFL!! That must have been an exciting experience. What is one of your most remembered "time/s" you experienced? :)
 
So is this about Soccer or American Football?

American Football used to have a pretty stright forward definition of offside but these days the idea has been muddied.

Soccer offside doesn't matter. You never see it when it happens. You just take their word for it.

Being a big soccer fan, some offsides calls can be game changers and matter big time! Plus, most of the replays show clearly the penalty for what it is if it wasn't obvious to the live fans. I guess your not a big soccer fan. :)
