Why do people cross their legs?

While sleeping, I almost never move at all, dream 100% of the time, and rotate every time I wake up, side, to back, to side etc. Thin me, most often cross my legs while sleeping because it somehow feels more comfortable, especially if on my back. But just sitting in a chair usually do not. Am not the fidgeting type, so tend to be still once positioned, sitting or standing.

I don't think too much about how I or others cross their legs at the knees or ankles. What gets me is why/how women can tuck their legs up under them when sitting in a cushioned chair or couch. That looks so uncomfortable to me. I couldn't fold up my long legs like that. Ouch!

My legs are short, and not slender, so crossing my legs when sitting has never been comfortable for me. I do however cross my ankles. This way I take up less room on public transport. I would like it if men did the same ,but I think I understand why they like to manspread.
