Why do things happen at the worst time stories.

My story is going on now. Because of the drifting snow, I have 3-4 feet of snow on the other side of my front door and my back door. The storm doors open out. I'm not sure how I can even open them. It 27 degrees with white conditions. The wind is horrendous. And my furnace just died. I called for service. But the employees can't get to the shop. I'm on "the list". 3 days ago, it was 60 and the furnace worked perfectly. That's my worst time story.

Can you get by with some supplemental heat from the oven in your kitchen stove? We used to turn on the oven and open the oven door when I was a kid. We also opened the closed cabinets under the kitchen and bathroom sinks so what heat we did have could circulate freely in those enclosed areas to keep the pipes from freezing, in extreme situations we turned the cold water faucet on to create a constant trickle that helped keep the pipes from freezing, not ideal if you have a well and a pump that will be constantly working. If things get really serious don't hesitate to call 911 or the local volunteer fire department to get you to a safe location. Good luck!

Fuzzybuddy, that's terrible! Do you have a fireplace or electric radiators or heaters? Is there a neighbor you can call to help shovel your snow? How are you in the food department, enough in the pantry to get you through for a few days at least?

That's terrible. I am on the border of PA about 50 miles from the gap. About 16 to 18 inches of snow but the wind is just howling. I hope you have heaters as others have mentioned. I wish you the best of luck and hope this wind dies down.

According to the evening news, 10's of thousands of people caught in this huge storm are without electrical power...and will probably be so for days. Alternative heating sources are of no value if they rely on electricity....only if a house has natural gas, or propane heating, can things like a stove/oven be of use. About the Only device which can help in such a storm is a generator...but then, it must be a big one with at least 15,000 watts to run an electric furnace...and the homeowner must have a huge supply of gas on hand to power it for more than a few hours.

Murphy's Laws Always apply when a major storm hits, and if a person hasn't prepared for the worst...it will probably happen.

I'm touched by all the caring posts. Yeah, I'm able to keep warm. I have a gas stove. And surprisingly turning on all the lights in the house does keep the place warm. It never got below 67. When the wind died down, I was finally able to light the pilot light in the furnace.
Again. Thank you for your kindness, and worrying about me. I'm grateful.

Fuzzy, hopefully things will start to warm up tomorrow. I'm probably in the same weather system as you, and that's what they're predicting here. So at least, this will end soon.

Thanks for the update Fuzzy, it doesn't sound so threatening now, I was worried about you. :love_heart:

Definitely. The oven gives off great heat and can really help. And keep the water running a trickle so the pipes don't freeze, but keeping the oven on helps with this too.
