Actually Holly, that's the way that some restaurants are setup here... even at the hugely popular, Starbuck's (around here anyway) you pay for your order when you order, then wait for the foodstuff to be either delivered to your table or merely brought up to the counter (and they may or may not call out that your order is ready by name/number... the customer sometimes has to keep their eyes open for their order)... also, different restaurants have different wait times between the paying and your receiving the foodstuffs... it could be immediate or it could be several minutes.

Can you imagine buying a bus or train ticket, and then before you get off your asked to pay a portion of the drivers salary.... or at the supermarket... pay for your groceries but before you leave you have to leave 20 % extra for the cashier... what ?... no-one would stand for it... and rightly so. The employers pay a living wage.. and that should apply to all restaurant and bar staff as it does in every other country

we have starbucks here as well... we pay for the order before sitting down... but we don't tip.... annd most people don't tip at a coffeee shop anyway... but we don't tip until after we've drunk our coffee. if the coffee is awful, then there's no tip...if it's good then there might be a tip...

However at a coffee shop why would you tip?.. they already get paid to make a cup of coffee... and then you have to go get it yourself..its not like they bring it to your table..even...

here ''service charge'' is added to some restaurant bills.. mainly the finer or more expansive restaurants.... and if the customer is not satisfied wth the service they are at complete liberty to not pay the service charge, and strike that part off the bill before paying...

I've read stuff like that supposedly from food delivery workers.. but I wouldn't have cheap food like pizza or burgers delivered by some scruffy oink... anyway...

Yeah... kinda' insane, isn't it. It seems we've all become just so many lemmings looking to corporations for our marching orders. But that's the way of things... like I said though, it's been my experience and I don't want to make my experience some monolithic thing as it could be different in other parts of the US.
Anyway, yeah... I go into Starbucks and place my order and there's a small computer screen thingy right in front of the register that's for showing the order, the price and payment options and swipe your card. It which includes the part that folks have been talking about... how much would you like to tip... I can't remember exactly what it is at Starbucks but it's like 15% - 20% - 25%... and then a wee small button at the bottom of the screen for "custom tip" or some such thing. And then you go sit down and wait if you're inside, but if you're at the drive-thru they pretty much have the order ready because you placed that at an earlier window... but you pay before they hand you your order, usually.
The world has gone crazy... I try to just sit and watch because I feel like a lunatic conspiracy nut for pointing out the obvious anymore. 😅
 
This is an interesting topic and I can see both sides of this coin. The difference in motivation between salaried and commission‑based salespeople can be striking. Of course, this cuts both ways. A commission‑driven salesperson may be tempted to stretch boundaries, or even bend rules outright, in pursuit of a sale. A salaried one may avoid such excesses but also may not invest the same energy in shaping a high‑quality experience.
