Why Tipping Feels Like a Scam Now

Unbelievable.😧..perhaps someone needs to retrain them and make them understand that tips are given for excellent service.. not as a random gift *sheesh*
Actually Holly, that's the way that some restaurants are setup here... even at the hugely popular, Starbuck's (around here anyway) you pay for your order when you order, then wait for the foodstuff to be either delivered to your table or merely brought up to the counter (and they may or may not call out that your order is ready by name/number... the customer sometimes has to keep their eyes open for their order)... also, different restaurants have different wait times between the paying and your receiving the foodstuffs... it could be immediate or it could be several minutes.

the thing is regardless of how much they earn, that should be down to the employer to ensure that their staff earns a living wage...not the consumer...

Can you imagine buying a bus or train ticket, and then before you get off your asked to pay a portion of the drivers salary.... or at the supermarket... pay for your groceries but before you leave you have to leave 20 % extra for the cashier... what ?... no-one would stand for it... and rightly so. The employers pay a living wage.. and that should apply to all restaurant and bar staff as it does in every other country
Well said!

we have starbucks here as well... we pay for the order before sitting down... but we don't tip.... annd most people don't tip at a coffeee shop anyway... but we don't tip until after we've drunk our coffee. if the coffee is awful, then there's no tip...if it's good then there might be a tip...

However at a coffee shop why would you tip?.. they already get paid to make a cup of coffee... and then you have to go get it yourself..its not like they bring it to your table..even...

Parties of 8 or more will have the gratuity added onto the tab, which us generally around 18%. They may not always be at the same table, but if they are all part of the same party, they include the tip. This is generally at the finer restaurants, however, I have seen it added on at the middle of the road type restaurants also.
here ''service charge'' is added to some restaurant bills.. mainly the finer or more expansive restaurants.... and if the customer is not satisfied wth the service they are at complete liberty to not pay the service charge, and strike that part off the bill before paying...

Hi HollyDolly, no, I meant if you go back to the same restaurant and did not leave a tip the first time, they could spit on your food before serving you in retaliation. Also, if you ordered a pizza and did not give the person a tip, they might spit on your food to retaliate. There have been instances on the news about this.
I've read stuff like that supposedly from food delivery workers.. but I wouldn't have cheap food like pizza or burgers delivered by some scruffy oink... anyway...

Yeah... kinda' insane, isn't it. It seems we've all become just so many lemmings looking to corporations for our marching orders. But that's the way of things... like I said though, it's been my experience and I don't want to make my experience some monolithic thing as it could be different in other parts of the US.
Anyway, yeah... I go into Starbucks and place my order and there's a small computer screen thingy right in front of the register that's for showing the order, the price and payment options and swipe your card. It which includes the part that folks have been talking about... how much would you like to tip... I can't remember exactly what it is at Starbucks but it's like 15% - 20% - 25%... and then a wee small button at the bottom of the screen for "custom tip" or some such thing. And then you go sit down and wait if you're inside, but if you're at the drive-thru they pretty much have the order ready because you placed that at an earlier window... but you pay before they hand you your order, usually.
The world has gone crazy... I try to just sit and watch because I feel like a lunatic conspiracy nut for pointing out the obvious anymore. 😅

This is an interesting topic and I can see both sides of this coin. The difference in motivation between salaried and commission‑based salespeople can be striking. Of course, this cuts both ways. A commission‑driven salesperson may be tempted to stretch boundaries, or even bend rules outright, in pursuit of a sale. A salaried one may avoid such excesses but also may not invest the same energy in shaping a high‑quality experience.

I agree... but yet we hear more of American waiting staff being inept...or grumpy, or lacking in many ways yet still expecting or being downright angry if a tip is not let for them

I read one person who said after a particularly bad service they left no tip, and were chased after....down the street ...

In places like Spain , Greece, Austrial, Switzerland, Sweden Dubai & Japan ... where tipping is optional or even banned ( Japan)... waiting staff are excellent.. cheerful helpful, immaculately dressed....

Now you're just making me jealous! ☹️

Well, it's not that cheap, we pay about $55 for Greek food delivery.
I know... fast food is expensive here..2 Pizzas can set people back £50 here... but they use anyone to deliver it.. that's the problem.. they don't check their backgrounds, nothing..in fact many of them are really not fit to be working for anyone

I always go and buy my own take-away food..never get it delivered

This has been standard restaurant practice for as long as I can remember.

Generally speaking, American waitstaff are professional and go out of their way to be helpful. I can't remember the last time I had a bad waiter or waitress.

Spark employees that deliver for Walmart expect a tip. And if you don't they will just keep passing your order around til someone finally takes it. It's called tip baiting. They take pictures of people's houses without their knowledge and post them on reddit.

Spark is a contractor and won't pay an actual wage.

With the prices I can't afford it anymore.

And then still get grumpy that I don't tip. That was at the beach in Holland. Never going there again. It was awesome, great sight, sea, what else do you want, but you had to wait and walk 5 minutes at least to find someone so you could pay and leave and when I finally found one, I think it was the owner, who asked an absurd amount of money for some mediocre food,

like fries with chickensticks in satésauce or crisps with a dip sauce, he got mad and grumpy that I didn't tip. You don't have to tip in Holland. I bet he earns way more than me. I gladly give money to a poor beggar, but not a rude owner who asks loads for lousy food just because the sea looks good.
